Julie Payette
Julie Payette , CC , CQ CMM COM CD (born October 20, 1963 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian astronaut . She was the 29th Governor General of Canada from October 2, 2017 to January 21, 2021 .

Studies and academic work
Payette attended elementary and secondary school in Montreal. With a scholarship, she was admitted to the United World College of the Atlantic in Great Britain in 1980 , where she graduated from school two years later . Back in Canada, she studied engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University in Montreal and received a Bachelor of Engineering with honors in 1986 .
In IBM Canada Payette took then for two years a job as a systems engineer at before at the University of Toronto continued her studies. In 1990 she obtained a Master of Applied Science degree in computer science and then went to the IBM research laboratory in Zurich ( Switzerland ). As a visiting scholar, she worked on automatic speech recognition for computers. In 1992 she returned to Canada and began researching this area at Bell-Northern Research in Montreal from January.

When the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) was looking for new astronauts in the early 1990s, 5,330 people applied. After half a year of tests and interviews, there were four candidates left who were selected in June 1992. Julie Payette was the only woman from this selection group.
After completing her basic training, she worked on Canada's main contribution to the International Space Station , the robotic arms , and founded a CSA group on human-computer interaction in space travel. She also got a pilot and diving license in 1996. She learned the Russian language and speaks her mother tongue, French, as well as English , Spanish , Italian and German .
Together with her colleague Steve MacLean , Payette took part in NASA's astronaut training at the Johnson Space Center from autumn 1996. She was trained as a mission specialist with the 16th US astronaut group . Immediately afterwards, Payette was named for her first space flight, which she undertook in May / June 1999 on board the space shuttle " Discovery ". STS-96 brought several tons of equipment to the ISS that were needed for its expansion. The Canadian operated the space shuttle's robotic arm on this mission .
Payette then acted as the contact person for the Canadian astronauts and represented the CSA towards NASA, Roskosmos and ESA . From 2000 to 2008 she was head of the Astronaut Corps of Canada.
In February 2008, Payette was assigned her second space flight. Under the command of Mark Polansky , she took part in the STS-127 mission, during which parts of the Japanese Kibō module were brought to the ISS. The launch took place after several postponements on July 15, 2009, the landing on July 31, 2009. In 2010 she received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal .

According to the CSA and Governor General of Canada
On July 15, 2013, Payette assumed a director position at the Montreal State Science Center . At the same time, she became Vice President of the state real estate company Canada Lands Company . On July 13, 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Queen Elizabeth II had accepted his proposal to appoint Payette Governor General. On October 2, 2017, she took office as the successor to David Johnston .
CBC reported on July 21, 2020 that Payette had created a "toxic work environment" at her Rideau Hall headquarters by bullied and verbally abused employees. Startled by this report, the Privy Council launched a formal investigation into their behavior two days later. Several former Montreal Science Center employees told the National Post that they had witnessed similar abusive behavior by Payette while at the institution. Others described their behavior as the result of rigorously high standards. On January 21, 2021, Payette resigned as governor-general after completing the independent job review.
Private
Payette is divorced twice and has one son. She loves classical music. Before her aerospace career, she sang in the chamber choir of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra , in the Tafelmusik Baroque orchestral choir in Toronto and during her stay in Switzerland at the Piacere Vocale in Basel.
In 2010 she was one of the bearers of the Olympic flag at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver .
