Origin and history

Welsh Corgi Pembroke at Corgi Symphony 2019. 17th March 2019.

Just like the " cardigan ", the Pembroke comes from Wales as early as the 10th century and is said to be a descendant of the Welsh herding dogs , and has been known as a cattle dog since the 12th century. Legend has it served the Welsh Fairies Fairies as guard and mount. In this context, the fur markings on the back and behind the forelegs, which are particularly noticeable on sable-colored corgis, are interpreted as prints from the saddle and girth. In fact, he genetically belongs to the group of English, Scottish and Irish small dogs to which u. a. the Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog) counts, from which he probably inherited the fur markings.

In 1925 the Pembroke and the Cardigan were jointly recognized as a breed by the UK Kennel Club , it was not until 1934, after many disputes, that the two breeds were recognized separately. The British Queen Elizabeth II kept Pembrokes Welsh Corgi since 1933 and bred them until 2009. In April 2018, her last Corgi “Willow” died. The Welsh Corgi Pembroke has been on the Kennel Club's watch list since 2015, as only 366 puppies were entered in the stud book. In the US, however, he was number 13 of the most popular dogs in 2018.

description

His hair is medium in length, straight and has a thick undercoat. According to the breeding standard, it reaches a size of up to 30.5 cm with a maximum weight of 12 kg. The ears are erect and medium-sized.
