Dandy Diary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dandy Diary is a German blog that deals with the topics of men, fashion and trends. In 2009 the blog was founded by fashion journalist David Kurt Karl Roth. In 2010, the political scientist Carl Jakob Haupt (1984-2019), a school friend of Roth, joined as an author and second operator.

Founding motives

David Roth founded Dandy Diary out of frustration at the more or less non-existent German-language fashion blogs for men. He studied fashion journalism and stated in an interview with Die Welt that he “wants to be clear about what works and what doesn't”.

Events and promotions

Dandy Diary is characterized above all by artistic-critical actions and projects that relate to the fashion world.

The men's fashion blog first gained widespread attention in the German-speaking media when Haupt and Roth released the film Será el comienzo in January 2012 . The film is considered "fashion porn", its world premiere took place in a Neukölln sex cinema and was praised by the press.

Since January 2012, Haupt and Roth have regularly organized an unofficial opening party one day before the twice-yearly Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin , which the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung called “the most spectacular event of the fashion week”. The first Dandy Diary Berlin Fashion Week Opening Party took place in cooperation with the fashion blog LesMads in the scene club “Flamingo”. This party was characterized by a massive number of visitors, which it ultimately could not withstand. The club, which is approved for around 400 people, had to be closed at 11 p.m. 800 people did not get in and sometimes waited for hours to be admitted. In July 2012 the opening party with 1400 guests took place in two circus tents at the Berlin Postbahnhof . In addition to Italian harlequins, dwarfs, fire-breathers and jugglers, a living elephant attracted attention. Animal rights activists tried to end the party but failed.

In November 2012 the Dandy Diary Designer Quartet tournament took place in Hamburg . In the quartet developed by Dandy Diary, prominent fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld , Miuccia Prada , Marc Jacobs , Henrik Vibskov and others are shown as caricatures on 32 cards . The individual designers compete against each other in the categories of age, sexiness, number of unpaid interns and penis or clitoris size. The NZZ wrote: "The Designer Quartet is a game with a high fun factor and bitter humor that, if it were available in stores, might have been banned long ago."

Together with the Italian jeans manufacturer Diesel , Dandy Diary organized a party in Hamburg in December 2012. In a gay sex club there was a party in the midst of fetish objects and a sauna. The American rapper Brooke Candy performed there for the first time in Europe. She is now the muse of the new Diesel Creative Director Nicola Formichetti.

On December 23, 2012 Haupt and Roth released their first music video . The song Christmas Time was written by Haupt and the musician Lee Sebastian especially for this purpose, the accompanying video was produced in the Czech Republic . Visually, the music video is based on the fashion of boy groups from the 1990s, but all of the clothes actually come from 2012 collections by well-known brands. Dandy Diary wanted to address the recourse to the fashions of the 90s in the current fashion world.

At the start of the Berlin Fashion Week in January 2013, Dandy Diary occupied a house at Friedrichstrasse 112 in Berlin and organized a party under the motto “Squat House”. This event should be understood as a commentary on the fashion topic “ punk ”, which puts aesthetics before content - and thus undermines the term “punk”.

The most sensational action by the two bloggers was the “#fashionooball” project, in which Dandy Diary smuggled an employee into the fashion show of the Italian label Dolce & Gabbana as a naked speedster in May 2013 . The bloggers later stated that the campaign was to show how fashion bloggers are used by fashion houses today and that they wanted to reverse this by using the space of the presentation, the catwalk , for their own purposes. The campaign was a topic in almost all international fashion media and was featured in many Italian news programs and daily newspapers.

Also in May 2013, Dandy Diary released their second music video for the song My Girl . Part of the song was sung by LayZee, a former member of the pop group Mr. President , and the video was produced in Mallorca . Aesthetically, the music video plays with the proximity of avant-garde fashion and plumpness . All the clothing shown comes from so-called high fashion labels, but can also be interpreted as cheap beach fashion by laypeople. The video met with criticism due to sexist scenes with local strippers . At the same time as this music video was released, Haupt and Roth announced that Christmas Time and My Girl were part of a “pop music triptych, ” a larger work that consists of three parts. However, they left open what the third part of the series will look like.

As a prelude to Fashion Week in July 2013, the Dandy Diary Pool Party took place in Berlin's KitKatClub . The first live performance of their recently published summer hit My Girl took place there.
