Anthony Dowell
Sir Anthony James Dowell (born February 16, 1943 in London ) is a British ballet dancer and choreographer .
Anthony Dowell was educated at the Hampshire School and the Royal Ballet School . In 1961 he became a member of the Royal Ballet . Two years later he was selected by Frederick Ashton , then director of the Royal Ballet, to play the role of Oberon in The Dream . It was the first collaboration with Antoinette Sibley who danced the Titania . They were one of the most outstanding couples in ballet history .
He quickly became known to a larger audience for his combination of excellent technique and expression. Among other things, he danced Albrecht in Giselle and Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake .
In 1966 he was appointed "Principal Dancer" of the Royal Ballet and is considered one of the most outstanding dancers of the 20th century.
In 1972 he was inducted into the Order of the British Empire (CBE) as Commander . He was the youngest dancer ever to receive this honor.
On November 21, 1995, he was beaten to the Knight Bachelor and has since carried the title "Sir".
From 1986 to 2000 he took over the management of the Royal Ballet.
