The 1988 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 7th at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest and was the tenth race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
With regard to the field of participants, there was no change compared to the German Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
training
Although the other teams hoped to have similar chances on the comparatively angled Hungaroring as the McLaren , who had dominated the season unprecedentedly so far, Ayrton Senna again achieved pole position, albeit with a lap time only around a tenth of a second better than Nigel Mansell . Thierry Boutsen and Ivan Capelli formed the second row ahead of Alessandro Nannini and Riccardo Patrese . Alain Prost , who usually had a starting position in the front row, took seventh place ahead of Maurício Gugelmin .
run
Mansell started slightly better than Senna, but the latter was able to use the additional power of his turbo engine to take the lead again before the first corner. Again he defended this position to the finish. Mansell followed ahead of his Williams teammate Patrese and the two Benetton drivers Boutsen and Nannini.
Prost, who had dropped to ninth after the start, needed up to the 47th lap on the circuit, which offered relatively few opportunities to overtake, in order to establish the McLaren one-two lead that was almost familiar this season. He caught up with his teammate and even passed them briefly. Senna countered immediately successfully, however, exploiting a small mistake Prosts.
Prost crossed the finish line less than a second behind Senna. Boutsen came third in front of Berger, Gugelmin and Patrese.
