The 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Pirelli Magyar Nagydíj 2015 ) took place on July 26th at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród and was the tenth race of the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship .
report
backgrounds
After the British Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by 17 points over Nico Rosberg and 59 points over Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 160 points ahead of Ferrari and with 220 points ahead of Williams .
On the weekend before the race, Jules Bianchi died after being in a coma after an accident at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix . Shortly before the start of the race, the drivers and teams observed a minute's silence on the grid.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
Compared to the previous year, there were modifications in some places on the route. The outside safety fences at the end of the start-finish straight and between turns five and six have been replaced. To prevent the vehicles from lifting off when driving over the curbs at the apex of curve six, the upper part of the curbs was removed here. In turn 14, the tire stacks were now covered with a plastic tarpaulin.
There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. Zone one was on the start-finish straight, the measuring point was five meters before the start of the finish curve. The second DRS zone was on the back straight after curve one; there was no separate measuring point for this zone. So it could happen that after an overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the pilot in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.
Marcus Ericsson (five), Pastor Maldonado , Sergio Pérez (four each), Vettel (three), Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Roberto Merhi and Max Verstappen (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Hamilton (four times), Button (twice), Fernando Alonso , Kimi Räikkönen and Daniel Ricciardo (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Lajos Herczeg (HUN), Tim Mayer (USA), Lars Österlind (SWE) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA) acted as race commissioners .
The week before the race there was a hearing against the Lotus team in a British creditors' court, as several supplier companies, including Xtrac , had sued for the payment of outstanding invoices. Xtrac had filed for bankruptcy , and the team was able to avert bankruptcy through a payment. Since, under British law, only one creditor can file for bankruptcy at the same time and the British courts are unable to negotiate because of the holiday season, the team said the team would be safe from claims by other creditors until September. Lotus only received the tires required for the race weekend shortly before the start of the first free practice session, as Pirelli did not want to release them due to a payment arrears. According to the team, there were technical problems with the transfer of the installment payment for the tire bill.
training
In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 25.141 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Raikkonen. The training had to be interrupted twice. First, Pérez drove over the curbs on the exit of turn eleven, breaking his rear suspension and spinning. After crashing into the lane, the vehicle overturned and remained on the roll bar. A few minutes before the end of the training session, Raikkonen drove over the curbs. His front wing broke and the rubble also caused a tire damage.
In the second free practice session, Hamilton was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 23.949 minutes ahead of Daniil Kwjat and Daniel Ricciardo . Force India did not take part in this training as a precautionary measure, as the suspension break should first be examined more closely. Ricciardo had to park his car shortly before the end of the training session with an engine failure.
In the third free practice session, Hamilton again set the fastest time in 1: 22.997 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. Raikkonen had to park his Ferrari in the pits at the halfway point of the training session after losing fluid that got onto the rear wheels. During a starting exercise at the exit of the pit lane, Rosberg's engine died around two minutes before the end of the training session, and that was the end of the training session for him. Both Force India pilots returned to training after the suspension was reinforced overnight. The analysis of the suspension break at Pérez carried out in Silverstone had shown that it was triggered by the constant running over of the curbs.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. The two Marussia and Sauber pilots as well as Button were eliminated.
The second qualifying segment (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. Hamilton was again fastest. Alonso complained about a lack of engine power on his first lap and stopped shortly before the pit entrance, after which qualifying was interrupted. With the help of the sports attendant, Alonso pushed his vehicle back into the pit lane, but was then no longer allowed to participate in qualifying. For this reason he could not set a time and left, just like Maldonado, the Force India pilots and Carlos Sainz jr. out.
The final section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton secured pole position with a time of 1: 22.020 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. Hamilton achieved his ninth pole position this season and the fifth in a row.
run
The race was planned over 70 laps. Since Felipe Massa was not in his starting position after the warm-up lap, there was a second warm-up lap and the race distance was shortened to 69 laps. Massa received a five-second penalty for this, which he had to serve at the first pit stop.
Both Mercedes drivers started badly, so that Vettel and Raikkonen took the lead in the first corner from Rosberg and Hamilton. Ricciardo lost several positions after touching Valtteri Bottas in the first corner. When attacking Rosberg, Hamilton went off the track on the first lap, had to drive through the gravel and dropped back to tenth place. At the end of the first lap, Vettel was leading ahead of Raikkonen, Rosberg, Bottas, Kwjat, Hülkenberg, Ricciardo, Pérez, Massa and Hamilton.
Vettel was able to maintain the lead in front of Raikkonen and Rosberg, the gaps between the drivers increased to several seconds. Ricciardo passed Hulkenberg and Kwjat one after the other, Hamilton overtook Massa and Pérez. At the first pit stops, Rosberg and Ricciardo switched to the harder tire compound, the Ferrari drivers and Hamilton again switched to the softer tire compound. Grosjean was sent back on the track after his stop, although another vehicle was just passing the Lotus box. Grosjean received a five-second penalty and two penalty points for this.
Maldonado and Pérez collided at the exit of the first corner, Pérez spun, but was able to continue. Maldonado was given a drive-through penalty and two penalty points for causing this collision. Hamilton caught up with Ricciardo, but only managed to overtake him after a few laps. At the head of the field, Vettel and Raikkonen continuously expanded their lead over Rosberg. Hamilton succeeded in the following laps in reducing the gap to Rosberg from 15 seconds to around five seconds.
In lap 41 Raikkonen reported a loss of power to the pits via radio, and the team confirmed that the MGU-K was no longer working. Alonso managed to round back after being lapped by Raikkonen. Two laps later, Hulkenberg lost his front wing on the start-finish straight, which he then ran over. This broke into many pieces, Hulkenberg drove straight ahead at the end of the straight with blocking front wheels and hit the tire wall. After the virtual safety car was first activated, the safety car came out to salvage the many debris . This led the drivers through the pit lane so that the marshals could clean the track. All pilots use this opportunity to change tires. Vettel led in front of Raikkonen, Rosberg, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Kwjat, Bottas, Verstappen, Alonso and Button.
At the restart on lap 49, Rosberg passed Raikkonen. Ricciardo overtook Hamilton on the outside, while Hamilton braked himself and collided with Ricciardo. Hamilton damaged his front wing and dropped several positions back. Kwjat left the track at turn six when he overtook Hamilton. Behind it, Bottas and Verstappen collided, and Bottas suffered a puncture. Hamilton had to have his front wing changed in the pits, switched to the softer tire compound again and fell back to 13th place. In addition, he received a drive-through penalty and two penalty points for causing the collision with Ricciardo, and Verstappen also received a drive-through penalty and three penalty points for driving too fast behind the safety car. Maldonado also received a drive-through penalty for driving too fast in the pit lane. Raikkonen was also too fast in the pit lane, but was significantly slower than Maldonado and received a five-second time penalty.
Ricciardo overtook Raikkonen and narrowed the gap to Vettel and Rosberg, all three drivers were separated by less than two seconds. Kwjat in fourth also managed to catch up with the drivers at the front. Raikkonen went into the pits, where he switched off his engine and it was restarted. He then drove three more laps and then gave up the race. Meanwhile, Hamilton drove the fastest laps in the field and overtook several pilots, so that he was already back in the top 10. Sainz gave up the race due to a technical defect at this point.
When attacking Rosberg, Ricciardo braked in the first corner. Rosberg passed him again, the vehicles touched and Rosberg suffered a puncture. He drove slowly back to the pits and fell back to ninth place. Ricciardo also had the damaged front wing changed in the pits, he only had to let Kwjat pass and was now in third place. Kwjat received a ten-second time penalty and two penalty points for leaving the track during the overtaking maneuver against Hamilton. Maldonado also received a ten-second time penalty for overtaking Will Stevens too early at the end of the safety car phase .
Vettel won the race ahead of Kwjat and Ricciardo. It was the second win of the season for Vettel and a non-Mercedes driver, and for Kwjat the first podium of his career. Ricciardo was third on the podium for the first time since the 2014 US Grand Prix . It was also the first race without a Mercedes driver on the podium since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix . The top 10 were completed by Verstappen, Alonso, Hamilton, Grosjean, Rosberg, Button and Ericsson. For Verstappen it was the best result of his career so far, for Alonso and McLaren the best result of the season.
The first three positions in the driver and constructor standings remained unchanged.
