The 2015 Formula 1 World Championship was the 66th season of the Formula 1 World Championship and again comprised 19 Grands Prix. It began on March 15 in Melbourne, Australia and ended again on November 29 on Yas Island off Abu Dhabi . On October 25th, the Briton Lewis Hamilton prematurely became world driver champion for the third time. Mercedes won the constructors' world championship .

New to the calendar was the Mexican Grand Prix ( Mexico City ), which was already included in the provisional calendar for the 2014 season, but not included in the final 2014 calendar. The Korean Grand Prix , which was last on the racing calendar in 2013, was also back on the calendar. However, it was uncertain where the race should take place. In addition to the Korean International Circuit in Yeongam , a street circuit in Seoul was also mentioned as an option. For the first time in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship, there was a racing calendar with 21 races. On January 6, 2015, the FIA ​​announced that it would remove the Korean Grand Prix from the racing calendar, so the number of races remained at 20.

The regularly agreed change of the German Grand Prix from the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg to the Nürburgring was not confirmed when the race calendar was announced due to the change in ownership of the Nürburgring, the venue of the race initially remained open. Bernie Ecclestone said in mid-January 2015 that discussions with those in charge of the Hockenheimring would be in progress about hosting the race: It cannot take place at the Nürburgring because nobody is available there. Nürburgring managing director Carsten Schumacher admitted that the Nürburgring had no contract for 2015, while Hockenheimring managing director Georg Seiler confirmed that the current contract of the Hockenheimring only applies to the 2016 and 2018 races. In a fax to the Rhein-Zeitung on February 2, 2015, Ecclestone wrote [...] that there will be no Formula 1 race in Germany . However , he later told Reuters that the race was unlikely to take place, but that there were still attempts to save it. On March 17th, those responsible for the Hockenheimring announced that they would not hold the Grand Prix, although Mercedes-Benz had offered to contribute to the cost of the race, according to media reports twelve million euros. Two days later, the management of the Nürburgring announced that it would not host the race. The race was officially canceled on March 20th.

Because of Jules Bianchi's accident at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix , which occurred as darkness fell, races in Australia, Malaysia, China, Japan and Russia started an hour earlier.

Technical regulations

There were new regulations for the design of the vehicle nose, there were minimum cross-sections both 50 mm and 150 mm behind the nose tip. In addition, the vehicle noses had to be symmetrical when viewed from above.

The total weight of the vehicles including the driver increased by 11 kg to 702 kg.

The brake discs had to turn at the same speed as the wheels.

To improve safety, more stringent crash tests were required, and there was also improved locking of the wheel nuts.

The wind tunnel hours and CFD calculations were again reduced for the 2015 season for cost reasons; an average of 25 units per week were allowed over a period of eight weeks. One unit represented either one hour in the wind tunnel or 1.0  TeraFLOPS for CFD calculations. In addition, the maximum number of wind tunnel runs per week was reduced from 80 to 65 hours. Each team was also only allowed to use a single wind tunnel.

The cars had to be equipped with titanium strips on the underbody, which caused increased flying sparks when the vehicle touched down.

The engine manufacturers were allowed to make design changes to the drive units used in 2014 to a certain extent. For this purpose, so-called tokens were assigned to the individual components of the drive unit , the total of all tokens is 66. Each manufacturer was allowed to use 32 tokens (or around 48 percent) for modifications for the 2015 season.

At the beginning of January 2015 it became known that a final homologation of the engines before the start of the season was not explicitly stipulated in the regulations. Contrary to previous assumptions, the engine manufacturers were allowed to carry out the final homologation of their drive units for the 2015 season during the current season. However, manufacturers who are new to Formula 1 were exempt from this rule; the homologation had to take place on February 28, 2015.

As Honda felt at a disadvantage as a new engine supplier and threatened to protest against competitors making modifications during the current season, the FIA ​​accepted a compromise whereby Honda would be granted as many tokens for changes during the current season as the other three engine manufacturers in the Left average unused in the first race. If the average does not produce an even number, it was rounded down.

As part of the Australian Grand Prix , the FIA ​​announced that Mercedes had left seven, Ferrari ten and Renault twelve tokens unused. This gave Honda nine tokens for changes.

Sporting regulations

In 2015 there were two days of testing after two races during the season. In the preseason these were carried out after four races. Two test days were reserved exclusively for young drivers. On June 26, 2014, at the FIA ​​World Council meeting in Munich, it was proposed that after a safety car phase , a restart should always take place instead of the flying clearance. However, this regulation was not incorporated into the Formula 1 sports regulations published in December 2014.

In addition, the “ Virtual Safety Car ” (VSC) was introduced for 2015 , the procedure transmitted and electronically displayed a virtual safety car phase in the participants' cockpit. In the virtual safety car phase, the rules were applied similarly to the normal safety car phase, except that the safety car was not used. The VSC was usually used when double-waved yellow flags were required in a section of the route and drivers or officials could be endangered, but the circumstances did not make the use of the safety car necessary. In the Formula 1 cockpits, the drivers were shown “VSC DEPLOYED” ( German: “Virtual Safety Car used” ) and the electronic flags read “VSC”. In the sections of the route with the VSC displayed, the participants had to keep to the predetermined speed.

The safety car was allowed to return to the pits as soon as the last driver lapped had passed the leader and not only when all lapped drivers had reached the end of the field.

The parc fermé rule now applied from the third free practice instead of qualifying. In addition, the curfew , during which it was not allowed to work on the vehicles during the night, was extended from six hours to seven hours.

The award of double points in the last race of the season was abolished after only one season.

In addition to the five-second penalty introduced before the 2014 season, there was a ten-second penalty from 2015, which was to be imposed in the event of an “unsafe release”, i.e. driving off unsafe after a pit stop. Both the five-second and the ten-second penalty now had to be served at the next pit stop before starting work on the car. Previously, this was possible at any subsequent pit stop.

In the course of a season, only four instead of five copies of the individual modules of an engine unit were allowed to be used. In addition to the combustion engine itself, these were the two generators MGU-K and MGU-H, the energy store, the turbocharger and the control electronics. If a complete change was necessary, the driver no longer had to start from the pit lane, but was allowed to start the race from the last place on the grid. A penalty was cumulative for replacing the individual parts of the motor unit. If the end of the field was reached after a relocation, excess penalties were converted into time penalties.

After the number of races was increased to 21 in December 2014, the regulations allowed not four but five drive units. There has been speculation in the media that the Korean Grand Prix was added to the racing calendar only to increase the number of engine units allowed and that there was no chance of the race actually taking place. This impression was reinforced by the fact that the operators of the Korean International Circuit were not informed in advance of the inclusion of the race in the racing calendar. In addition, the race was scheduled for May 3, 2015, one week before the Spanish Grand Prix , which is an almost impossible task for the teams' logistics. Bernie Ecclestone wanted to help the engine manufacturers Ferrari , Honda and Renault in this way , as the engines from Mercedes were considered to be superior in terms of both performance and reliability. Ecclestone claimed the race was added to the calendar because the organizer had a contract that ran until 2016. Otherwise there was a risk of legal action by the organizer. The expected deletion of the race from the calendar took place on January 6, 2015.

With a new version of Article 28.4 of the sporting regulations, it was clarified on March 2, 2015 that an increase in the engine contingent would only take effect if more than 20 races were scheduled in the calendar at the start of the season. As a result, only four engine units per vehicle were allowed in the 2015 season. In contrast, on July 1, the strategy group decided that new manufacturers would have another engine unit available in the first year. This also applied retrospectively for 2015 and thus for Honda.

So that the drivers could easily be distinguished from one another on the route, the basic paintwork of a driver's helmet could not be changed during the season. According to Toto Wolff , the teams made this as a compromise in order not to have to put larger start numbers on the vehicles. This regulation caused criticism from the ranks of the drivers.

Between the last race of the season and the end of the calendar year, the teams were now allowed to run a maximum of 15 kilometers in show runs with the current cars.

After the Grand Prix of Great Britain , the FIA ​​announced rule changes that affected the largely automated start of vehicles from the Grand Prix of Belgium . For example, the friction point of the clutch was not allowed to be changed between the time the pit lane lights turned green (30 minutes before the start of the race) and the start of the race. In addition, technical aids that could be used to automatically determine the optimal grinding point were banned. In addition, the pit radio was severely restricted before the race, and discussions about the start procedure immediately led to a penalty.

Engine suppliers

Honda got back into Formula 1 as an engine supplier at the start of the season, McLaren was the only team to start with Honda engines.

In July 2014, Lotus announced that it would change the engine manufacturer for the 2015 season and start with Mercedes units instead of Renault engines . Lotus bought it prematurely from the Renault contract for five million euros.

Daniil Kwjat moved from Scuderia Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing and replaced Sebastian Vettel there . Vettel originally had a contract for the 2015 season, but drew a release clause. Since he was not within the first three drivers in the world championship on September 30, 2014, he was allowed to terminate his contract. Vettel eventually switched to Ferrari , where he replaced Fernando Alonso , who was actually tied to Ferrari until 2016. Alonso then returned to McLaren .

Will Stevens , who had contested the last race of the season for Caterham in the preseason , moved to Marussia .

Marcus Ericsson moved from Caterham to Sauber . His team mate was Felipe Nasr , who started for Carlin in the GP2 series last year and was also test and reserve driver for Williams .

Max Verstappen entered Formula 1 with Scuderia Toro Rosso . In 2014 he started for Van Amersfoort Racing in the European Formula 3 championship and finished third overall. With Carlos Sainz jr. Jules Bianchi , who competed for Marussia last season , has been in a coma since a serious accident at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix . Before the start of the season, the criteria for issuing a super license were changed by the FIA, but the changes did not come into effect until the coming season . The 2015 season was therefore the last in which drivers who had neither reached the age of 18 nor had a driver's license could take part .

Teams

The insolvent team Caterham , founded in 2010, no longer competed in 2015.

The FIA ​​had Marussia on the provisional entry list for the 2015 season under the name Manor F1 Team . However, the team had to cease operations in November 2014 due to insolvency and was temporarily managed by an insolvency administrator. On February 19, 2015, the racing team was released from bankruptcy proceedings. The team management tried to be at the start of the first race of 2015 in order to be entitled to the premium payments from the previous season. On March 4, 2015, Manor announced that it would be competing in the Australian Grand Prix with a modified car from last year under the name “Manor Marussia F1 Team” .

Before the start of the season, several other teams had significant financial difficulties. They included Sauber , Force India, and Lotus . Force India's sports director spoke of "a hard winter". The problems were indirectly related to the insolvency of Caterham and Marussia: Due to the failures of the two teams, several Formula 1 suppliers themselves got into economic difficulties, whereupon they set the remaining teams significantly shorter payment terms than in previous years. Season preparation

The first week of testing took place from February 1st to 4th at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain. With the Ferrari SF15-T , the Lotus E23 Hybrid , the McLaren MP4-30 , the Mercedes F1 W06 Hybrid , the Red Bull RB11 , the Sauber C34 , the Toro Rosso STR10 and the Williams FW37 , eight cars made their track debut. Force India decided not to take part in these test drives because the VJM08 was not completed on time and test drives with the previous year's vehicle were not informative enough. However, it has been speculated that there are other reasons the team should be insolvent. Lotus arrived on February 1st and did not take part in the test drives until February 2nd.

At the start of the test on February 1, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was the fastest with 1: 22.620 minutes, followed by Marcus Ericsson in a Sauber and Nico Rosberg in a Mercedes . Vettel was more than 0.6 seconds faster than the best time in the test drives in 2014. On that day, Rosberg covered almost 700 kilometers with 157 laps and was the driver with the greatest distance, Ericsson and Valtteri Bottas in the Williams drove with 73 each Round the second largest. Fernando Alonso in the McLaren only drove six laps due to electrical problems with the Honda engine, and Carlos Sainz junior in the Toro Rosso also had technical difficulties and only drove 46 laps.

On the second day of the test, Vettel was again the fastest with 1: 20.984 minutes, ahead of Sauber driver Felipe Nasr and Bottas. Vettel undercut the best time from the previous year by more than 2.2 seconds. Despite a water leak that ended the test drives for Mercedes three hours earlier that day, Lewis Hamilton drove the longest distance with 91 laps, followed by Vettel (88 laps) and Nasr (87 laps). Pastor Maldonado covered 41 laps in the Lotus on the car's track debut. McLaren, today with Jenson Button at the wheel, again only drove six laps with technical problems. Daniil Kwjat went off the track in the Red Bull and damaged his front wing. Since there were no spare parts available, he only covered 18 laps at slow speed during the day; he did not drive a timed lap. In the afternoon it started to rain so that the teams only drove a few laps.

On the third day it rained in the morning and the track began to dry up around noon. Nasr was the fastest driver with 1: 21.545 minutes, followed by Kimi Räikkönen and Rosberg. With 151 laps, Rosberg again drove the longest distance, followed by Sainz and Nasr. Alonso drove 32 laps with the McLaren, which was the first time several laps in a row, but he had to break off the test day in the early afternoon with a water leak.

On the last day of the test drives, Raikkonen set the fastest lap in 1: 20.841 minutes, ahead of Ericsson and Hamilton. This was also the fastest lap time of the entire test week and more than 2.4 seconds faster than the best time in the previous year. Hamilton drove the longest distance with 117 laps, but Ericsson and Raikkonen also covered more than 100 laps. Button drove the least with 35 laps, and Romain Grosjean also only covered 53 laps.

19. – 22. February: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

The second week of testing took place from February 19th to 22nd at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. Force India took part in these test drives with a repainted car from last year, the premiere of the VJM08 was not to take place until the third week of testing.

On February 19th, Pastor Maldonado set the fastest lap with 1: 25.011 minutes, followed by Kimi Räikkönen and Daniel Ricciardo . Max Verstappen covered the greatest distance that day with 94 laps, followed by Susie Wolff and Felipe Nasr . Lewis Hamilton had to stop the test drives in the morning after only eleven laps because he was suffering from a cold with a high fever . Around noon, Pascal Wehrlein , who had previously driven for Force India, took over the Mercedes. Sergio Pérez drove the Force India for the rest of the day. Even Jenson Button had the tests noon quit because of a design flaw , a change of the engine was necessary on a seal of the ERS-K. In the early afternoon Nasr and Wolff collided, both vehicles were damaged and landed in the gravel . After the accident, the drivers blamed each other for the collision. Shortly before the end of the test day, however, both of them took part in the test drives again with their repaired cars.

On February 20th, Ricciardo was fastest with a lap time of 1: 24.574 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Felipe Massa . Ricciardo also drove the longest distance with 143 laps, ahead of Pérez and Marcus Ericsson . With 155 laps, Mercedes was the team that could complete the most laps. Nico Rosberg only drove in the morning because of a nerve inflammation in the neck area, after which the recovered Hamilton took over the car. Fernando Alonso covered the shortest distance with 59 laps. This corresponded to almost a complete race distance, although McLaren had announced the day before that the test drives would have to be done on that day with the faulty seal on the ERS-K, as the newly designed spare part would not be available until February 21st.

On February 21, Maldonado was fastest in 1: 24.348 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Hamilton. Verstappen drove almost two complete race distances with 129 laps, followed by Daniil Kwjat and Sebastian Vettel . With 24 laps, Button once again drove the lowest distance by far, because despite the newly designed seal on the ERS-K, the same problem arose as on the two previous days. Ericsson also only drove 53 laps because the transmission in his car had been damaged and Sauber had no replacement transmission available.

On February 22nd, Romain Grosjean was fastest in 1: 24.067 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Kwjat. Grosjean set the fastest lap of the test week and was more than 1.1 seconds faster than Hamilton's pole position at the 2014 Spanish Grand Prix . Rosberg covered the greatest distance with 131 laps, followed by Valtteri Bottas and Grosjean. With Alonso, another McLaren driver covered the shortest distance with 20 laps. After he was delayed in starting the test drives due to the installation of the newly delivered ERS-K seal, he had an accident in the late morning. He had to be rescued from the vehicle after the accident because he could not get himself out of the car and was transported to the hospital in a rescue helicopter. McLaren announced shortly afterwards that this was a purely precautionary measure and that Alonso was unharmed. The third week of testing took place from February 26th to March 1st at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. With the Force India VJM08, the ninth car made its debut in these test drives.

On the first day of testing, February 26th, Felipe Massa set the fastest time with 1: 23.500 minutes, followed by Marcus Ericsson and Lewis Hamilton . Ericsson covered the greatest distance that day with 122 laps, followed by Massa and Carlos Sainz jr. Jenson Button only drove seven laps and had to break off the test drives in the morning because the engine had to be changed due to a hydraulic leak.
