After the Belgian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by 28 points over Nico Rosberg and 67 points over Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 184 points and Williams with 265 points .

At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . As a result of several tire damages in the previous race, Pirelli increased the prescribed minimum tire pressure.

There were two DRS zones, the first zone was behind the Curva di Lesmos , the measuring point was 95 meters in front of the curve entrance of the second Curva di Lesmos . The measuring point for the second zone was 20 meters in front of the Curva Parabolica , the DRS zone was on the start-finish straight.

Before the race, it was announced that Mercedes was using a further developed version of the Mercedes-Benz PU106B Hybrid during the race . Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains used all seven tokens still available for this .

Pastor Maldonado (six), Marcus Ericsson , Max Verstappen (five), Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez (four each), Vettel (three), Jenson Button , Hamilton, Nico Hülkenberg , Daniil Kwjat and Roberto Merhi (two each) went with penalty points into the race weekend.

With Vettel (three times), Fernando Alonso and Hamilton (twice each) three former winners competed at this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Paolo Longoni (ITA), Tim Mayer (USA), Lars Österlind (SWE) and Danny Sullivan (USA).

Pole setter Hamilton on the way to the starting grid

Lewis Hamilton won the race ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa.

For the second time in his Formula 1 career, Hamilton managed what is known as a “ perfect race ” because, starting from pole position, he finished all laps as the leader, thus achieving a start-to-finish victory and also driving the fastest race lap . He had previously achieved this at the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix . In addition, he had already achieved the best time in all three free practice sessions and in each section of the qualification.
