backgrounds

After the Italian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by 53 points over Nico Rosberg and 74 points over Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 181 points and Williams with 263 points .

At the Singapore Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

In the week before the race, there were repeated discussions about a possible cancellation because there was smog in Singapore due to slash and burn in Indonesia . The values measured here were sometimes classified as very unhealthy .

There were two DRS zones on the route. The measuring point for the first zone was at the exit of turn four , the DRS zone begins 48 meters after turn five . The second measuring point was 80 meters before turn 22 , the DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 45 meters after turn 23 .

Compared to the previous year, the route was changed slightly. The curve radius of turn eleven was reduced so that the vehicles had to drive significantly slower at this point. Also curve twelve has been modified here, the pilots drove now in the left lane on the Anderson Bridge . In addition, the track width in the following hairpin was increased by one meter so that the drivers should have more space for overtaking maneuvers. Changes were also made to the run-off zone in turn one , adding lines and higher curbs that forced a driver driving through the run-off zone to choose a different line.

At Manor there was a driver change before this race: Alexander Rossi replaced Roberto Merhi and made his Formula 1 debut. At the Russian Grand Prix in 2014 , after Jules Bianchi's accident, he was already registered as a driver for the team that was then still running under the name Marussia, but the registration was withdrawn shortly before the event.

Pastor Maldonado (six), Max Verstappen (five), Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez (four each), Vettel (three), Jenson Button , Hamilton, Nico Hülkenberg and Daniil Kwjat (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Vettel (three times), Fernando Alonso and Hamilton (twice each) three former winners competed at this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Martin Donnelly (GBR), Nish Shetty (SIN) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN).

training

In the first free practice session, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 47.995 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo . The training had to be stopped four minutes before the end after an accident by Rossi.

In the second free practice session, Kwjat set the fastest time in 1: 46.142 minutes ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Ricciardo. Training had to be interrupted after a few minutes after Will Stevens had strayed from the track and crashed into the track. His team-mate Rossi was only able to drive a few laps in the last minutes of practice, as his car had to be repaired after the accident in the first free practice.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 45.682 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Kwjat. The two Mercedes drivers Hamilton and Rosberg were in fifth and sixth, more than a second behind Vettel.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Kvyat was the fastest. The two Marussia pilots, Maldonado and the Sauber pilots were eliminated.

The second qualifying segment (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. Vettel was fastest. Sainz hit the road barrier shortly before the end of the section, his suspension broke and debris lay on the route. An improvement was no longer possible because of the yellow flags. The McLaren pilots, Sainz and the Force India pilots were eliminated.

The final section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Vettel secured pole position with a time of 1: 43.885 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Raikkonen. For the first time in the season, there was no Mercedes driver on pole position.

The Manor pilots Rossi and Stevens received starting place penalties of five places each for an early gear change. Since both qualified for the last two places, this had no effect.

run

All drivers in the starting field started on the softer tire compound. At the start, Verstappen stopped and the marshals pushed his car into the pit lane, from where he started the race one lap behind. The leading positions remained unchanged at the start of the race, Bottas briefly passed Rosberg, who, however, countered when braking into turn three and was back in sixth place.

Vettel managed to break away at the top. From the seventh lap on, his lap times became slower and Ricciardo drove between 0.3 and 0.5 seconds per lap faster in the following laps.

The first drivers came to their first tire change on lap ten. Felipe Massa collided with Hülkenberg after his pit stop, Hülkenberg spun and hit the track barrier. He retired, the race management then activated the virtual safety car in the first sector . Hülkenberg was given a starting place penalty of three places in the following race and two penalty points for causing this collision. Hulkenberg admitted to being responsible for the accident in the week after the race. All pilots use this opportunity to change tires. Hamilton and Rosberg switched to the harder tire compound, all other drivers in the leading group again to the softer tire compound. The Kwjat stop lasted a little longer, so Hamilton and Rosberg passed him and were now fourth and fifth. Shortly afterwards, the safety car was sent out to clean the track .

When restarting the positions remained unchanged. Sainz had problems with his vehicle and it could no longer engage a gear. He fell back to the end of the field, but was able to continue as normal after restarting the system. Shortly afterwards, Hamilton slowed down and his car could no longer reach the usual top speed on the straights. The team suspected a problem with the electronic gas pedal, Hamilton fell back to the end of the field in the following laps and then gave up the race. It was the first time since the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix that Hamilton did not finish in the points. After the race it became known that a defective hose clamp between the airbox and intercooler was responsible for the loss of performance. Massa also had to give up the race after his car repeatedly failed to shift into gear.

On lap 38 there was another safety car phase because there was a person on the racetrack. All drivers who had not already done this in the previous laps took this opportunity to change their tires. Alonso gave up the race in the pits. After the restart there was a collision between Button and Maldonado in midfield, in which Button damaged his front wing. He had to come to the pits to change the wing and fell back to the end of the field.

Vettel controlled the race ahead of Ricciardo and Raikkonen. Vettel and Ricciardo alternately set the fastest lap times to date. Button gave up the race a few laps before the end with transmission problems. Maldonado fell behind the two Sauber drivers with his worn tires and then pitted to have another tire change. He was then the fastest driver in the field, but was unable to catch up with the drivers in front of him by the end of the race. Grosjean, who was in tenth place and also had very old tires, braked three laps before the end and had to let Nasr overtake. Subsequently, Grosjean gave up the race. Verstappen and Sainz caught up with Pérez, but failed to get past. On the penultimate lap, Verstappen was instructed to let Sainz overtake, which he refused.

Vettel won the race ahead of Ricciardo and Raikkonen. It was the third win of the season for Vettel and Ferrari and the first time since the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix that two Ferrari drivers were on the podium. For Ricciardo and Räikkönen it was their second podium finish this season. Rosberg, Bottas, Kwjat, Pérez, Verstappen, Sainz and Nasr completed the top 10. Ricciardo drove the fastest race lap.

The top three positions in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
