The Marina Bay Street Circuit is a temporary motorsport racing circuit in Singapore . On the street circuit since found in 2008 the Singapore Grand Prix during the Formula 1 instead.

The course is located in Marina Bay in the port area of the city-state of Singapore and is therefore atmospherically very similar to the Monaco Grand Prix and the 2008 European Grand Prix, which was also held for the first time on the Valencia Street Circuit , due to its proximity to the water . In addition, a night race was held here for the first time in Formula 1 history. The race as well as the qualification and free practice sessions are carried out under artificial lighting . However, it was announced that the asphalt run-off areas would be less brightly lit in order to avoid confusion among drivers. As a night race in the East Asian region, viewers in Europe can watch the Grand Prix in the afternoon as usual, which should have a positive effect on TV ratings .

The track runs counterclockwise and 70% on public roads, which is why it is called a temporary race track . The course of the curve is only partially typical for a street circuit, although there are numerous 90 ° curves that can only be negotiated very slowly, but also high-speed passages that are passed at almost 300 km / h, what a course that is via public Roads runs exceptionally fast. According to Bernie Ecclestone, the Marina Bay Street Circuit is said to be the fastest street circuit in Formula 1 history. The number of 26 corners (15 left, 11 right) is currently the highest on the Formula 1 calendar and demands a lot from the transmission due to the numerous gear changes. The course was built very wide, the narrowest part of the track measures ten meters, which corresponds to the widest part on the Monaco race track.

Routing

The newly built start-finish area is located in the east of the Marina Bay district in the area of the Benjamin Sheares Bridge , under which the course runs four times. A hairpin bend takes this new section of the route to normal streets - Republic Boulevard first , then Raffles Boulevard . The top speed is also reached at the end of this street. Then three 90 ° curves lead on St Andrew's Road along the Padang as well as some old buildings from the British colonial era such as the Old Supreme Court Building . After a straight there is the triple chicane called the "Singapore Sling". This is followed by the almost 100 year old Anderson Bridge , the narrowest part of the racetrack. A slow bend at the old Fullerton Hotel leads over the wide Esplanade Bridge back into the more modern Marina Bay district . At the Esplanade Theater , a right-hand bend leads to the last part of the route, consisting of some slow 90 ° bends. Here the course passes under a grandstand before it leads to the double finish curve at the Singapore Flyer . In 2013 there were minor changes to the route. After various accidents, the so-called "Singapore Sling", the left-right-left passage around turn ten , was defused and replaced by a single left turn. The curbs of this combination of curves were so high that some vehicles took off when driving over them. An accident involving Kamui Kobayashi was particularly spectacular ; his car flew over a meter high through the air. However, the conversion did not lead to any noticeable improvements in lap times.

In 2015, changes were made to the route again, but this time they were larger. The curve radius of turn eleven was reduced, and the following turn twelve became narrower, so that the drivers now drive on the left and no longer the right side of the Anderson Bridge . The route was widened by one meter in the area of turn 13 . The track operators hoped to create another overtaking opportunity through the change.

Others

The race was canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
