Anderson Bridge (December 2005)

The Anderson Bridge is a truss road bridge in Singapore . It crosses the Singapore River and was opened in 1910. The bridge is 70 m long and 23 m wide. It consists of three steel arches connected to one another and supports two two-lane carriageways separated by the central steel arch. There is a path for pedestrians to the left and right.

The planning for this vehicle and pedestrian bridge dates back to 1901. The Singapore River Commission (Singapore River Committee) determined that the Cavenagh Bridge , built in 1869, was no longer sufficient for the increasing traffic between the business and government districts. Therefore it was decided to build a new bridge. In 1904, the Straits Settlements government commissioned the Singapore community to draw up detailed plans for a new bridge.

Construction began in 1908, and it was opened on March 12, 1910 by Sir John Anderson , then governor of the Straits Settlements, after whom the bridge is named.

In 1997 the Esplanade Bridge was opened to further relieve traffic , but the Anderson Bridge retained its function as a road bridge. Over both bridges leads since 2008 the Marina Bay Street Circuit for the Singapore Grand Prix of Formula 1 .
