Read Bridge
The Read Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Singapore River in Singapore . It crosses the river at Clarke Quay, northwest of the center of the Singapore River planning area . It was built to replace the older Merchant Bridge and also the Tock Seng's Bridge , which no longer met the new traffic conditions.
The bridge, which was built between 1881 and 1889, is a girder-supported bridge and was named after the politician William Read . It used to be called Malacca Bridge , derived from the Malaysian Jembatan Kampong Melaka (for "Malaccan Village Bridge" after the name of a settlement near Merchant Road) and from the Chinese name Kam-kong ma-la-kah kio (in Hokkien ).
