Kim Seng Bridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kim Seng Bridge is a road bridge that spans the Singapore River in Singapore in the Singapore River planning area in the Central Region . Kim Seng Road runs over the bridge. Both are named after Tan Kim Seng , a businessman and philanthropist from the Peranakan ethnic group who also worked in Singapore .

The source of the Singapore River is generally believed to be near the Kim Seng Bridge, which now divides the Singapore River (east of the bridge) and Alexandra Canal (west of the bridge, formerly a river).

On the site of today's bridge, Tan Kim Seng built the first bridge in 1862, which was then named after him. It was replaced by a new building in 1890. The increased traffic forced the construction of a third bridge, which was built in 1950/1951; the name has not changed. The new bridge was made of prestressed concrete and steel. The new bridge is 20 m wide (twice as much as the previous bridges) and 26 m long and can carry up to 13 tons per m².

Colloquially, Kim Seng Bridge is also known as Hong Hin Kio (丰 兴 桥) in Hokkien and Fung Heng Lo (also 丰 兴 桥) in Cantonese.
