The 2009 Singapore Grand Prix took place on September 27th at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore and was the 14th race of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the Italian Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 26 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 40.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 84 points ahead of Ferrari .
Renault did without KERS again after one race .
Before the race weekend, Renault was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence for the crash gate . For this reason, the main sponsor, the ING Groep , and another sponsor, Mutua Madrileña , gave up their commitment with immediate effect before the race .
With Fernando Alonso (again) the only former winners entered in this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice Barrichello achieved the fastest lap ahead of Button and Mark Webber . Romain Grosjean , who drove into the wall at turn 13 , caused an interruption . The curious thing about the incident was that it resembled the deliberate accident involving Nelson Piquet Jr. the year before. In the second free practice, which began in Singapore at 9:30 p.m. local time, Red Bull-Renault driver Vettel drove the fastest lap. Fernando Alonso and Heikki Kovalainen followed in second and third place . In the third free practice session on Saturday, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg .
Qualifying
Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap in the first section of qualifying. The Force India pilots, Grosjean, Fisichella and Alguersuari were eliminated. In the second part, Nico Rosberg sat at the head of the field. Trulli , Buemi , Räikkönen , Button and Nakajima did not make the leap into the final section. Half a minute before the end of the last qualifying section, Barrichello had an accident in turn 5 and triggered the termination of qualifying. Since nobody could improve anymore, pole position went to Hamilton, who had set the fastest time ahead of Vettel and Rosberg.
run
Hamilton, starting from pole position, started well and kept his lead confidently. Vettel, who started from second place, did not get into the race so well and was overtaken by Rosberg before the first corner. In the first round there were also further shifts: Barrichello improved to seventh place, his team-mate Button to tenth place. In addition, there was a debatable overtaking maneuver: Webber, who was behind Alonso, passed the Renault driver using the run-off zone. A short time later, Timo Glock also overtook Alonso. Webber only stayed in fourth place for a few laps, however, as his team had instructed him to let the two pass in order to avoid a possible punishment for the overtaking maneuver against Alonso.
After three laps, the race for Grosjean was over due to braking problems. At the top, Hamilton was able to continuously break away from his pursuers. Only Rosberg and Vettel stayed with Hamilton within ten seconds. However, all the trump cards were with Hamilton, who had the most gasoline on board of the leading trio. In the back of the field, a close group formed as newcomer Alguersuari held the riders behind him. However, Adrian Sutil , who was directly behind the Spaniard, did not manage to drive past him for the time being. In the meantime, there was a yellow flag for a few laps in a section of the track because Glock had lost part of his racing car. However, the German was able to continue without any problems. The part was removed from a marshals after a few laps.
From the leading trio, Vettel pitted first and came back onto the track behind Barrichello. One lap later, Rosberg also completed his pit stop. He came back on track ahead of Barrichello, but the Brazilian quickly passed him. After Glock and Barrichello had been in the pits of the pilots in the lead, the leader Hamilton came into the pits and was able to defend his lead in front of Alonso, who had not stopped yet. In the meantime, the race stewards had become aware of the Rosberg pit exit: the German unintentionally drove over the white line and was therefore given a drive-through penalty.
In the back of the field, Sutil dared to overtake Alguersuari on Esplanade Drive . The maneuver was unsuccessful and Sutil then turned. When trying to drive back onto the track, he collided with Nick Heidfeld , who had started out of the pit lane and for whom the race was over on the spot. For the first time since the 2007 US Grand Prix, Heidfeld was not included in the ranking. Sutil was able to continue a few more laps, but had to retire at the pits a little later. After the race, Sutil was fined $ 20,000 for dangerous driving.
Because of the accident and the wreckage on the track, the safety car was sent out on the track. The pit lane was very busy as all the drivers who had not yet entered the pit completed their stops. Alguersuari left too early at his stop - like Felipe Massa a year earlier - and took the fuel hose with him. After the mechanics removed the hose, he resumed racing. Behind the safety car, Hamilton led the field in front of Rosberg, Vettel, Glock, Alonso, Barrichello, Kovalainen, Button and Webber. The safety car phase was particularly tragic for Rosberg, who had not yet completed his drive-through penalty. Two laps after the restart, the German took his penalty and came back on track in 14th. At the front, Vettel was able to put Hamilton under pressure, but failed to overtake him.
Vettel made his last pit stop on lap 39 and came back on track in seventh place. However, Vettel was too fast in the pit lane and was then given a drive-through penalty, which ultimately ruined the possibility of a race win. Hamilton and the Glock, now in second place, could stay out longer than Vettel, but Glock also had to go into the pits before Hamilton.
On lap 46, Webber flew off the Sheares curve with braking problems. Although the safety car was not needed, Hamilton immediately made his last pit stop and came back on track in second behind Alonso. Barrichello also had to go into the pits. However, his stop did not go perfectly because the engine ran out when he started. So he lost important seconds on his teammate Button. After 47 laps, both Toro Rosso drivers gave up in the pits at the same time.
After all drivers had made their pit stops, Hamilton led the field in front of Glock, Alonso, Vettel, Button, Barrichello and Kovalainen. Button tried to reduce his deficit on Vettel, but gave up a few laps before the end to save his brakes and score important points for the world title. Robert Kubica , who was eighth, was put under pressure by Nakajima, but was able to defend his position until the end of the race against the Japanese who did not attack him.
Lewis Hamilton won his second race of the 2009 season in Singapore without any further changes. Alonso set the fastest race lap.
In the World Cup, Button was able to extend his lead over Barrichello to 15 points, his lead over Vettel decreased to 25 points. Webber has no chance of the world title since that race. With the medal system proposed by Bernie Ecclestone before the season, Button would have won the world title in Singapore.
