The 2009 German Grand Prix took place on July 12th at the Nürburgring in Nürburg and was the ninth race of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the British Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 23 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 25 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 30.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 70.5 points ahead of Toyota .

It was the first Formula 1 race at the Nürburgring to be held as the German Grand Prix since 1985 .

McLaren- Mercedes used KERS again .

With Barrichello, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton (once each), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

Mark Webber took the lead in the first free practice . Button and Felipe Massa followed in second and third place . In the second Friday practice, world champion Lewis Hamilton achieved the fastest lap ahead of Vettel and Button. Hamilton also set the fastest time in the third free practice session. This time Fernando Alonso and Massa were in second and third place.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Webber set the fastest lap. The Toro Rosso pilots, Glock , Fisichella and Kubica were eliminated. In the short break between the first and second segment there was a rain shower that turned the second segment into a kind of "game of chance". On the drying track, Barrichello drove the fastest lap with dry tires. The Williams pilots, Trulli , Alonso and Heidfeld were eliminated. Because of the different track conditions, Barrichello was more than eight seconds ahead of Nico Rosberg , who was in last place. In addition, some pilots took advantage of the chance the weather offered them: Nelson Piquet junior , in contrast to his teammate Alonso, made it into the top ten in second and Adrian Sutil reached the last qualifying stage for the first time with his Force India . Eventually Webber took pole position ahead of Barrichello and Button. It was the first pole position for the Australian.

run

Although the weather forecast announced rain, the race started in dry conditions. Barrichello won the start and took over the lead from Webber. The KERS cars started very well: Hamilton tried to take the lead from fifth, but apparently there was contact between Hamilton and Webber and the Briton cut his rear tire. Massa, who owned KERS like Hamilton, worked his way up to fourth place behind Barrichello, Webber and Heikki Kovalainen , but was overtaken back by Button on the second lap. Button then tried to overtake Kovalainen, but since the McLaren-Mercedes had KERS, the championship leader had no chance against Kovalainen. Meanwhile, Barrichello and Webber gradually separated themselves from the rest of the field. Since Webber had more fuel in the tank and was able to follow the Brazilian, things initially went optimally for the Australian.

Sébastien Bourdais completed his last race of the season at the Nürburgring

On lap tenth it was announced that race officials were investigating an incident between Barrichello and Webber. Webber had touched Barrichello at the start and was therefore sentenced to a drive-through penalty by the race management. On lap 14, Barrichello and Webber finally came into the pit lane at the same time. Barrichello had to make a stop and Webber had to complete his drive-through penalty. With the two having a big lead over the rest of the field, Webber took the lead. Barrichello came back on track behind Kovalainen and Massa. On the 19th lap, Webber had to make his first regular pit stop and give up his lead. Since Kovalainen had pitted in the meantime, Massa took over the lead of the race. Behind Massa was Barrichello, who lost time in the long-distance duel against Webber because the Australian had free passage.

On the 24th lap, Bourdais had to end his race with hydraulic damage. It was the last race of the season for Bourdais, who was replaced by Jaime Alguersuari after this race . One lap later, Massa made his pit stop and Barrichello took over the lead of the race again.

Mark Webber won the race despite a drive-through penalty

After Sutil pitted, he came back on track behind Massa but ahead of Kimi Raikkonen . But the joy of winning the position did not last long, because he touched Raikkonen and damaged the front wing. A little later he had to stop repairs and his chances of getting points dropped significantly. At the front, Webber caught up with Barrichello and reduced his gap to a few seconds. Barrichello had to pit in front of Webber this time too and his chances of victory were further reduced by a fuel problem. At the top there was a one-two lead by Red Bull-Renault.

Felipe Massa came third in the Eifel

The race for Raikkonen was over on the 35th lap. The Ferrari driver gave up in the pits with engine problems. There were several changes in leadership during the final pit stops. The first to stop was Webber, who handed over the lead to Vettel. The German had to pit next and Massa took the lead. After the Brazilian was in the pits, Webber took over the lead of the race again. While the Red Bull-Renault drivers drove towards a one-two victory, the Brawn Mercedes drivers had to warm up their tires during the race and therefore drove serpentine lines.

In the end, Webber won the German Grand Prix ahead of his team-mate Vettel. It was the Australian's first victory in its 130th Grand Prix. Together with the Red Bull drivers, Massa was on the podium for the first time this season. The other points went to Rosberg, Button, Barrichello, Alonso and Kovalainen. In the drivers' standings, Vettel took second position, 21 points behind Button.
