Reports
background
The trend towards the high number of participants in the 1974 season also continued at the German GP at the Nürburgring. 31 riders tried to get one of the 26 starting positions for the race during the training sessions. The organizers rejected individual reports in advance. This concerned u. a. the Scuderia Finotto , which had reported a Brabham BT42 for the German racing driver Manfred Mohr .
With a few exceptions, the teams appeared with the same driver line-up as at the British Grand Prix two weeks earlier. The second cockpit of the Frank Williams Racing Cars team , which was given to paying guest starters as usual, was given to debutant Jacques Laffite this weekend . At Token Racing , David Purley was replaced by Ian Ashley , who was also on the entry list for a Grand Prix for the first time.
The Amon team was back for the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix . As Chris Amon was in poor health, the third debutant of the weekend, Larry Perkins , took over his car during training.
training
The training began with a serious accident involving Maki pilot Howden Ganley in the Hatzenbach section . Because of the injuries he suffered, he was unable to take part in the rest of the race weekend.
The two Ferrari 312B3 achieved the best lap times, with both Niki Lauda , who reached fourth pole position in a row, and Clay Regazzoni only missed the seven-minute mark by a few tenths of a second. This was followed by Emerson Fittipaldi and Jody Scheckter in the second row. Thus the four most promising pilots occupied the first four starting positions in the fight for the world championship.
Patrick Depailler and Carlos Reutemann formed the third row in front of Denis Hulme and Ronnie Peterson .
run
Since Lauda started badly, Regazzoni immediately took the lead, which he did not give up for the rest of the afternoon. While trying to make up for lost ground, Lauda collided with Scheckter after a few meters and was eliminated. Scheckter, however, was able to continue the race unaffected. He held his second position to the finish, as did Reutemann, who was third.
Fittipaldi hadn't got off to a good start either, which was overlooked by Hulme, who started much better from seventh place. The two teammates collided, after which Fittipaldi was initially able to continue the race. Hulme, on the other hand, got out and switched to the T-Car . Because of this rule violation he was disqualified after two rounds. Also in the second lap, Fittipaldi was eliminated due to a suspension damage as a result of the collision. He had previously had to drive back to the pits with a puncture over large parts of the extremely long route.
Jochen Mass was in fourth place up to the sixth lap . Then he was overtaken by the two Lotus pilots Jacky Ickx and Ronnie Peterson. He managed to overtake the Swede again before his engine failed on lap 11. This put Mike Hailwood in sixth place, which he held until the penultimate lap. Then he lost control of his car after a jump in the Pflanzgarten section and had a serious accident. The resulting injuries ended his Formula 1 career.
Clay Regazzoni took over the lead in the world championship again with his second victory after the Italian Grand Prix in 1970 . Tom Pryce scored his first World Championship point in sixth place.
Registration list
1 Chris Amon sold his number 30 car to Larry Perkins during practice because of nausea.
