The 1984 European Grand Prix took place on October 7th at the Nürburgring and was the 15th race of the 1984 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
Eight years after the 1976 German Grand Prix , Formula 1 returned to the Eifel race track to host the European Grand Prix . However, the race was no longer completed on the more than 20 kilometers long Nordschleife , which was no longer up-to-date for Formula 1 , but on the newly constructed Grand Prix track with a length of around 4.5 kilometers, which met the safety requirements applicable at the time corresponded.
Following BMW's announcement that it would no longer supply engines to the ATS Racing Team in the 1985 season , team boss Günter Schmid dismissed the previous regular driver Manfred Winkelhock and decided to end the 1984 season with the previous guest driver Gerhard Berger .
Mauro Baldi returned to the Spirit Racing team instead of Huub Rothengatter . Ayrton Senna replaced the Italian Pierluigi Martini at Toleman , who had represented him three weeks earlier at the Italian Grand Prix .
training
The front row sat as in Italy from the corresponding qualifying result on Friday Brabham of Nelson Piquet and the McLaren of Alain Prost together. Patrick Tambay and Keke Rosberg were the second row ahead of the two Ferrari pilots Michele Alboreto and Rene Arnoux .
As it was raining during the second qualifying session on Saturday, none of the drivers could beat the best time they had achieved the day before.
run
Both Prost and Tambay passed Piquet shortly after the start, while Senna collided with Rosberg in the first corner. Gerhard Berger crashed into the rear of Marc Surer's Arrows A7 . There was also a collision between Teo Fabi and Piercarlo Ghinzani . For five drivers, the race was over after just a few meters. Only Fabi was able to continue after being pushed by marshals.
Behind Prost, Tambay and Piquet, Derek Warwick followed in front of the two Ferraris from Alboreto and Arnoux. In the fifth lap, Niki Lauda , who started from 15th place, took sixth place. Until the 43rd lap, nothing changed within the leading group. Then, however, Tambay fell behind due to electrical problems. Ten laps later, Warwick could no longer defend his third place due to technical difficulties.
During the last lap, Piquet had to relinquish his second place to Alboreto due to a lack of fuel. Shortly afterwards, the latter also ran out of gas, so that both opponents rolled over the finish line without power and stopped a few meters behind. Niki Lauda was fourth ahead of René Arnoux and Riccardo Patrese . He thus took a lead of 3.5 World Championship points over his victorious team-mate Alain Prost into the season finale in Portugal .
Michele Alboreto and Nelson Piquet completed the fastest race lap at the same time, each on their 62nd lap.
