Reports
background
Two new Formula 1 cars made their first appearance at Brands Hatch. These included the first racing car designed under the direction of Frank Williams , which was called the Politoys FX3 and was driven by Henri Pescarolo . For the first time , the Frank Williams Racing Cars team did not appear as a pure customer team. Another new vehicle in the field was the Connew PC1, piloted by François Migault , whose first race start had to be postponed due to a defect.
At BRM , the plan to bring up to five factory cars to the start was abandoned. After Helmut Marko's final retirement because of his eye injury two weeks earlier at the French Grand Prix , Jackie Oliver was signed as the third driver alongside Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Peter Gethin for the British Grand Prix. They left these three vehicles for this weekend.
Since Clay Regazzoni was the second Ferrari driver to fail due to a broken arm, Mario Andretti was contesting a race in the USA and Nanni Galli was not competitive at the French GP, Arturo Merzario, who was a sports car driver under contract with Ferrari, was given the title Chance to make his Formula 1 debut alongside regular driver Jacky Ickx . Galli then took his place again in the Tecno team .
training
Jacky Ickx took pole position in the Ferrari and shared the front row of the grid with Emerson Fittipaldi, who led the world championship . Peter Revson and Jackie Stewart qualified for the second row. With Tim Schenken and Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the third row, there was a mixed starting field with six different cars in the first six places.
run
Ickx used his pole position to take the lead from Fittipaldi and Beltoise, who started well from the third row. It was followed by Stewart, Revson, Schenken and Peterson, with Stewart able to fight his way forward clearly within the first laps. In the 25th round he took second place from Fittipaldi. In lap 36, however, he could counter. The fact that Ickx had to give up on lap 49 due to a problem with the oil pressure turned the previous duel for second place into a battle for the top, in which Fittipaldi was able to hold his own against his opponent.
Revson finished in an undisputed third place. All other drivers were lapped at least once by the three podium finishers.
After Cevert had been eliminated on lap 61, Peterson was apparently in a safe fourth place for a long time until his engine burst on the penultimate lap in the area of the "Paddock Hill" curve. He lost control of his car and collided with the vehicles of Cevert and Graham Hill parked at the edge of the track , both of whom had previously retired at this point due to a driving error. Because of the distance he covered of 75 laps, he was classified seventh. Chris Amon , who started the race from 17th on the grid, finished fourth ahead of Denis Hulme and Merzario, who thus received a World Championship point on his Formula 1 debut.
Registration list
1 Jackie Stewart, Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Chris Amon each had a T-Car , but they did not drive timed practice laps and did not take part in the race.
