The 1972 Canadian Grand Prix took place on September 24th and was the eleventh race of the 1972 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

The Canadian Grand Prix took place in Mosport Park in 1972 because the Circuit Mont-Tremblant racetrack , on which the race had alternated annually with Mosport Park in previous years, was no longer available.

Reine Wisell was from BRM to Lotus changed to Dave Walker to represent as a second factory rider. Canadian guest starter Bill Brack took Wisell's place at BRM . In addition , as in the previous year , Skip Barber entered the two Grand Prix in North America with a private march.

training

The McLaren drivers were the only ones to stay under 1:14 min. and qualified for the front row, with Peter Revson achieving the first and only pole position of his career, as well as the first for his team. The two drivers apparently benefited from their track knowledge that they had acquired through their participation in the CanAm racing series . Bruce McLaren Motor Racing was the most successful team in the history of this racing series. Ronnie Peterson was able to qualify for third place in the front row in the factory March . Behind them, Emerson Fittipaldi , who was already world champion, started alongside Jackie Stewart .

run

As there was thick fog on the morning of the race day, the start time was postponed.

Peterson initially took the lead ahead of Stewart and Revson. Hulme dropped back into midfield after a bad start. However, Peterson was only able to maintain his lead for three laps, when he was overtaken by Stewart after a small driving error. Around the same time, Jacky Ickx , who had started eighth place, overtook third-placed Revson, but had to give up this place again after a short time because his engine was losing power. As a result, he fell behind Fittipaldi and Clay Regazzoni .

The order at the top remained essentially constant until Ronnie Peterson attempted to lap Graham Hill on lap 54 . Since this did not clear the way, the two collided, damaging Peterson's car. The Swede then pushed him back to the pits and returned to the race after a successful repair, but was disqualified shortly afterwards for this unauthorized procedure. His teammate Niki Lauda was also withdrawn from the competition three laps later because of a similar incident.

The battle for second place turned into a duel between Revson and Fittipaldi. The latter damaged his front wing, which had to be repaired on the box. He fell back to the end of the field. This put Regazzoni in third place, which he lost when he made a mistake lapping Skip Barber shortly before the end of the race and was overtaken by Carlos Reutemann and Hulme. As Reutemann ran out of gas on the last lap, Hulme finally made it onto the podium.
