The 1972 South African Grand Prix took place on March 4 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and was the second race of the 1972 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

Carlos Pace started his Formula 1 career at the second World Championship round of the season in a customer march under the direction of Frank Williams . Mike Hailwood began his involvement as a Surtees factory driver in this race after missing the Argentine Grand Prix six weeks earlier due to other commitments. Also not there was Jean-Pierre Beltoise , who feared legal consequences due to his involvement in the fatal accident of Ignazio Giunti , which had occurred at the same place a year earlier. He was registered as a BRM works driver for the first time for the South African GP that follows.

The German team Eifelland Caravans made their debut in this race. A March 721 modified according to a draft by the designer Luigi Colani with Rolf Stommelen at the wheel was used. After the conversion work, the car was named Eifelland Type 21 .

In line with the practice that has been common in South Africa for a number of years, the field has been expanded by several local private drivers.

training

The winner of the first race of the season, and consequently the leader in the world championship, Jackie Stewart qualified for pole position with his Tyrrell , undercutting the lap times of Ferrari driver Clay Regazzoni and Emerson Fittipaldi in the Lotus 72D by a few tenths of a second. Since the second row of the grid was formed by Mike Hailwood and Denis Hulme , there were five different vehicles on the top five grid positions.

run

At the start of the race, Hulme was briefly in the lead, but was overtaken by Stewart on the second lap. Regazzoni had dropped back into midfield after a bad start.

At the front, Stewart was able to gain a lead over his pursuers, while Hulme, Fittipaldi and Hailwood, who dueled for second place, also managed to break away from the rest of the field.

After Stewart had to retire on lap 45 due to a gearbox failure and Hailwood had already retired due to a suspension failure, Fittipaldi took the lead from Hulme.

On lap 57, Hulme managed to overtake Fittipaldi, who was now struggling with handling problems, and secure a victory. After Chris Amon fell behind for technical reasons , Peter Revson took third place in the second factory McLaren.
