background
During the comparatively short winter break, a few driver changes had taken place. In addition to the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet , Riccardo Patrese started for Brabham from then on. The new Brabham BT50 with a four-cylinder turbo engine from BMW was used right at the start of the season . Brabham started as the fourth team after Renault , Ferrari and Toleman into the turbo age, to which the future in Formula 1 seemed to belong.
Father's place at Arrows was originally to be given to Marc Surer . Since he was injured during test drives in Kyalami in the run-up to the season, Brian Henton was hired. The Italian debutant Mauro Baldi joined the team as a replacement for Siegfried Stohr , who had ended his racing career . With Riccardo Paletti and Teo Fabi there were also two other newcomers from Italy. Paletti became Jean-Pierre Jarier's new team-mate at Osella and Fabi took Brian Henton's former place at Toleman alongside Derek Warwick .
After Alan Jones resigned , second place at Williams was awarded to Keke Rosberg alongside Carlos Reutemann . The cockpit of the previous year was not filled again. Instead, the financially troubled Fittipaldi team started with only one vehicle, which was still driven by Chico Serra .
Niki Lauda , who returned to Formula 1 after two years of abstinence, became John Watson's teammate at McLaren . He pushed there Andrea de Cesaris , who then to Alfa Romeo moved to where Mario Andretti to replace the initially wanted to focus on race in its US homeland again.
Eddie Cheever moved from Tyrrell to Ligier , where he replaced Patrick Tambay . Slim Borgudd then took Cheevers place at Tyrrell and was replaced at ATS by Manfred Winkelhock . The team also used a second car, which was driven by Eliseo Salazar . Whose former team Ensign planned the engagement of the Colombian newcomer Roberto Guerrero . However, as this did not happen in time, the team decided not to take part in the first race.
At the beginning of the season, March presented itself with the new main sponsor Rothmans , the pilots Jochen Mass and Raul Boesel as well as the new type 821 and the change to the tire supplier Pirelli .
Ferrari, Renault and Lotus each retained the driver pairings with which they had completed the 1981 season . Most of the teams started the new season with last year's models.
The 1982 South African Grand Prix is still the last race to be held in January.
training
The drivers were dissatisfied with a contract they had to sign in order to receive the super license newly created by FISA . This regulated the relationship between the drivers and their team bosses. Led by returnees Niki Lauda, the drivers went on strike in the first free training sessions and the first of the two planned qualification training sessions. Instead, they retired to a nearby hotel and discussed a compromise proposal that was eventually accepted by FISA so that the second qualifying and race could take place.
René Arnoux qualified for pole position from Nelson Piquet and Gilles Villeneuve . Riccardo Patrese followed in fourth place, ahead of Alain Prost and Didier Pironi . As the best driver without a turbo engine, Keke Rosberg achieved seventh place on the grid next to his team-mate Carlos Reutemann.
Since, in contrast to the previous year, when the starting field was mostly limited to 24 vehicles, this season mostly 26 starters were admitted, only four of the 30 pilots who had traveled failed to qualify.
run
While Arnoux took the lead, Prost was able to take second place on the first lap ahead of the two Ferraris from Villeneuve and Pironi. Behind it followed Rosberg in front of Patrese. After a bad start, Piquet initially fell back to 13th place and retired on the fourth lap due to a brake defect.
By the sixth lap, Rosberg was pushed to seventh place by Patrese and Reutemann, but was already back in the points in the following lap due to Villeneuves' technical failure.
In the 14th lap, Prost took advantage of the fact that Arnoux was stopped by opponents to be lapped and took the lead. As Patrese retired on the 18th lap due to an engine failure and Pironi headed for the pits a little later to have his tires changed, the McLaren drivers Lauda and Watson made it into the points.
At the end of the 41st lap, Prost also had his tires changed in the pits and fell back to eighth place. Meanwhile, Pironi had fought his way back to third place. A little later, Prost managed to catch up even more impressively than his compatriot, which brought him back to the top by the 68th lap.
While Pironi fell back to last position, Reutemann overtook Arnoux six laps before the end of the race and came in second. Lauda, who had overtaken Rosberg and Watson around ten laps before the end, was fourth in front of these two.
