The 1982 Grand Prix of Las Vegas took place on September 25th as the 16th and final race of the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship in Las Vegas .
Reports
background
Although he only had one win in his Formula 1 career up to that point, Keke Rosberg was the clear favorite in the season finale, which, as in the previous year, was held on a temporary course in the Caesars Palace car park . His only remaining competitor was John Watson , as Didier Pironi, who was second in the World Cup, could not compete due to an injury. Watson had also achieved two victories in the 1982 season and, in order to become world champion, would have had to win the final run and also hope that Rosberg did not score any points.
training
Alain Prost achieved the tenth Renault pole of the year ahead of his team-mate René Arnoux . The second row consisted of the Tyrrell by Michele Alboreto and the Ligier by Eddie Cheever . Riccardo Patrese and Keke Rosberg were the third row ahead of the two Ferrari pilots Mario Andretti and Patrick Tambay .
As a result of a serious training accident, Jean-Pierre Jarier was canceled from the rest of the race weekend. Tommy Byrne moved up to the starting grid.
run
Patrick Tambay decided again not to participate in the race due to health problems. Since no replacement unit was available after an engine failure during training, Roberto Guerrero had to cancel the start, so that only 24 instead of 26 vehicles entered the race.
The two Renault drivers retained their positions, although Prost was initially able to assert himself against Arnoux. However, this overtook him on the second lap and then kept the lead until Prost regained the top spot on the 15th lap. Shortly thereafter, Arnoux retired due to an engine failure. From then on, Prost was followed by Alboreto, ahead of Watson, Cheever, Andretti and Rosberg.
Since Prost was hampered by strong vibrations, Alboreto managed to take the lead on the 52nd lap. Shortly thereafter, Watson came in second, which was not enough for him to win the title, especially since Rosberg was also fifth in the points. Since Prost was steadily slowing down during the last few laps, Cheever came in third.
Michele Alboreto won a Grand Prix for the first time. Keke Rosberg, who had also celebrated his first Grand Prix victory two races earlier at the Swiss Grand Prix, was established as world champion in 1982, as was Ferrari in the constructors' championship. It was only for the second time after Mike Hawthorn in 1958 that a driver became world champion with just one win of the season.
