The 1982 Belgian Grand Prix took place on May 9th at the Circuit Zolder in Zolder-Terlaemen and was the fifth race of the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

In order to prevent the FOCA teams from boycotting another race after the San Marino Grand Prix , FISA negotiated a compromise with the team leaders at a meeting in Casablanca .

There was a dispute within the Ferrari team about the stable orders . Gilles Villeneuve in particular was annoyed with his team-mate Didier Pironi , as he had overtaken him in the final meters in Imola . He refused to speak to his former good friend.

Emilio de Villota returned to Formula 1 after a four-year break at the wheel of a third factory March 821 . His project called LBT Team March was organized by Onyx Racing , but for formal reasons it was done by RAM Racing , which started this year under the name March Grand Prix . With Marc Surer and Jan Lammers , there were also two other returnees this weekend.

training

As 32 pilots were present, the two slowest drivers who were not allowed to participate in the regular qualification training had to be determined in a pre-qualification. It was Riccardo Paletti and Emilio de Villota.

During the second qualifying session on Saturday, Villeneuve tried to undercut the time of his recently hated team-mate Pironi in order to be ahead of him on the grid. During his qualifying round he ran into Jochen Mass , who was on his way back to the pits and was therefore driving comparatively slowly. Mass recognized the approaching Ferrari in the rearview mirror and released the ideal line by pulling to the right. Unfortunately Villeneuve had decided at the same time to pull past the German on the right off the racing line. As a result, he drove onto March 821 at high speed . His Ferrari 126C2 got on, landed with the tip of the vehicle ahead of the guardrails, and from there bounced back onto the track. The car broke into several parts and Villeneuve was thrown out with its seat shell. Resuscitation attempts were carried out directly at the scene of the accident and during the transport to the hospital. In the evening the medical equipment was switched off and Gilles Villeneuve was pronounced dead. The Ferrari team then left.

The two Renault factory drivers Alain Prost and René Arnoux shared the front row . In third place followed Keke Rosberg , who completed the first Grand Prix outing of the new Williams FW08 this weekend . Niki Lauda followed ahead of Michele Alboreto , Andrea de Cesaris and Nigel Mansell . The two Brabham drivers Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese , who, under pressure from the engine manufacturer BMW , used the new Brabham BT50 with a BMW turbo engine for the first time since the season opener in South Africa , qualified for eighth and ninth place on the grid.

Due to the non-participation of the Ferrari team, Jochen Mass and Mauro Baldi , who had actually missed the qualification, moved up into the starting field.

run

Prost was relegated to third place shortly after Arnoux and Rosberg started. When Arnoux drove into the pit on the fifth lap due to damage to the turbocharger and then retired shortly afterwards, Rosberg took the lead. Since Prost also had to struggle with technical problems, he fell behind Lauda and de Cesaris.

On the 29th lap, Lauda lost second place to de Cesaris in the course of a lapping maneuver. However, since he was eliminated six laps later due to a problem with the power transmission, the Austrian got back second place. In the meantime, John Watson had overtaken Patrese and from then on narrowed the gap to his team-mate Lauda, who appeared to be a little slower due to a softer tire compound. In the 46th lap, the two changed positions.

On the penultimate lap, Rosberg briefly missed the ideal line due to deteriorating tires. Watson took advantage of this small driving mistake to take the lead and secure the third Grand Prix win of his career. Rosberg crossed the finish line second ahead of Lauda. However, the Austrian was disqualified after the race because his racing car did not meet the required minimum weight. As a result, Eddie Cheever came third in front of Elio de Angelis , Nelson Piquet and Chico Serra .
