report

backgrounds

After the German Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 19 points ahead of Nico Rosberg and 84 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 159 points ahead of Red Bull and with 173 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Belgian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were minor changes to the route compared to the previous year: the curbs at the exit of Les Combes were extended to the end of the gravel bed , artificial turf was laid behind the kerbstones and the drainage improved. Artificial turf was also laid behind the curbs in the Stavelot .

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the Kemmel Straight and begins 310 meters after the Raidillon . The measuring point was 240 meters before the entrance to the Eau Rouge curve . The measuring point for the second zone was 160 meters before the bus stop chicane , on the start-finish straight, 30 meters after the last bend, the DRS zone began.

There was a driver change before the Grand Prix: Rio Haryanto was replaced by Esteban Ocon at Manor Racing .

Daniil Kwjat , Kimi Räikkönen (five each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Esteban Gutiérrez , Nico Hülkenberg , Felipe Nasr , Rosberg, Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Max Verstappen (three), Fernando Alonso , Romain Grosjean , Jolyon Palmer and Sebastian Vettel (two of each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Raikkonen (four times), Vettel, Hamilton (twice each), Felipe Massa , Jenson Button and Ricciardo (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Yves Bacquelaine (BEL), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Felipe Giaffone (BRA) and Danny Sullivan (USA).

Honda provided McLaren with an improved combustion engine and a further developed turbocharger for this race. Honda thus invested seven of the ten tokens still available for the change. Mercedes also used a further developed drive unit for the first time in Belgium, five tokens were used for this. Since both Hamilton and Rosberg used them, a relocation was accepted at Hamilton.

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 48.348 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. Hülkenberg, Ricciardo, Rosberg and Carlos Sainz jr. tested a prototype of the Halo system in this training . Rosberg even set the fastest time with it. In addition, several pilots drove with a new test tire from Pirelli.

In the second free practice session, Verstappen was fastest with a lap time of 1: 48.085 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Hülkenberg.

In the third free practice, Raikkonen drove in 1: 47.974 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Vettel. Due to technical difficulties, Verstappen was only able to drive two installation laps. Ericsson also only drove a few laps due to a technical problem.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Felipe Massa was the fastest. Alonso parked his car at the edge of the track with a defect and did not set any time, so he did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Besides him, Hamilton, the Sauber drivers, Kwjat and Ocon were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was the fastest. Just like Raikkonen, Ricciardo and Vettel, he drove his best time on the soft mix. Wehrlein, Sainz, the Renault and Haas drivers were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. With a lap time of 1: 46.744 minutes, Rosberg set the best time ahead of Verstappen and Raikkonen. It was the 28th pole position for Rosberg in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Hamilton was moved 30 positions back for the installation of a sixth and seventh turbocharger and the sixth and seventh MGU-K , the seventh component in each case being used purely for tactical reasons. As all components of the drive unit were changed again at Hamilton before the third free practice session, the penalty increased to 55 starting positions. Because of a gear change after qualifying, Hamilton was supposed to start from the pit lane; however, this penalty was subsequently corrected. Ericsson was also moved back by ten starting places because of the use of the sixth turbocharger, Alonso by 35 places because of the use of a sixth element of each part of the drive unit. Since the engine was changed again after qualifying at Alonso, the penalty increased to 60 starting positions. Gutiérrez was moved five starting positions back because he had obstructed Wehrlein in the third free practice and the race stewards classified the situation as dangerous because of the large speed difference between the two vehicles. Gutiérrez also received three penalty points.

run

At the start Rosberg remained in the lead, both Ferrari drivers passed the badly started Verstappen before the first corner. Ricciardo and Bottas also started badly and lost several positions before the first corner. In the first corner, Verstappen stayed on the inside next to Raikkonen. Vettel turned from the outside into the curve and collided with Raikkonen, whose front wing was damaged. Vettel turned and fell back to the end of the field. Then Verstappen and Raikkonen collided, with the front wing of Verstappen's Red Bull and Raikkonen's right front tire being damaged. All drivers who were able to drive past Vettel's Ferrari on the inside gained several positions, the well-started Pérez and Button had to drive past the Ferrari on the outside and lost a lot of ground. Rosberg led ahead of Verstappen, Raikkonen, Hülkenberg, Ricciardo, Massa, Grosjean, Bottas, Palmer and Sainz. Ericsson started from the pit lane.

Due to the pressure loss in the right front tire, the underbody of Raikkonen's Ferrari dragged on the road and caused massive sparks. Raikkonen fell back to the end of the field on the first lap. Verstappen initially drove on despite the severely damaged front wing, he used the asphalt run- off areas several times , but lost several positions. Grosjean and Palmer slowed down in Les Combes and lost several positions. Behind them, Kevin Magnussen also braked himself when attacking Button, so that both of them drove through the curve much more slowly. The little Wehrlein driving immediately behind was surprised by this and hit Button. Both vehicles were so badly damaged that the drivers retired shortly afterwards. At the end of the first lap, Raikkonen and Verstappen came to the pits for repairs. There was a fire on the underbody of Raikkonen's vehicle, so that the repair stop took significantly longer and Raikkonen fell back one lap. Nasr also pitted after running over rubble and sustaining a punctured rear left tire. After the first lap, Rosberg was leading ahead of Hülkenberg, Ricciardo, Massa, Grosjean, Bottas, Sainz, Pérez, Palmer and Magnussen.

On the second lap, Sainz suffered a right rear tire damage, which also damaged his rear wing. Sainz tried to save the damaged vehicle in the pits, but spun and gave up the race shortly afterwards when the rear wing finally broke away. Since the track was littered with debris, the race management announced a virtual safety car phase , which Massa used to change tires. Ericsson retired with a gearbox failure.

Rosberg led ahead of Hülkenberg, Ricciardo, Bottas, Grosjean, Pérez, Palmer, Magnussen, Gutiérrez and Alonso. After the virtual safety car phase was lifted, Pérez passed Grosjean. On the sixth lap there was a serious accident by Magnussen, who lost control of his Renault at the exit of the Eau Rouge and hit the track barrier backwards. A load of 12 g acted upon impact , Magnussen suffered a cut in the ankle in the accident and was flown to a hospital for treatment. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the car . Hülkenberg, Bottas, Grosjean, Pérez, Palmer and Gutiérrez use the safety car phase to change tires. Since the guardrail was also damaged in Magnussen's accident , the race management interrupted the race on the ninth lap. At this point, Rosberg was leading ahead of Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Hamilton, Massa, Pérez, Kwjat, Palmer and Grosjean. During the interruption, a Williams mechanic tripped over a cable and was slightly injured.

After around twenty minutes of repair time, the race was restarted with one lap behind the safety car. Rosberg, Pérez and Verstappen, who was in 15th place, had switched to medium tires, while all the other drivers drove soft .

On the twelfth lap, Hamilton overtook Alonso and was now in fourth place. In the back of the field, Raikkonen overtook Verstappen, who pushed him off the track in the following bend and stayed ahead. One lap later, when approaching Les Combes , Verstappen pulled on the line at more than 300 km / h immediately before Raikkonen, Raikkonen could only avoid a collision by braking. Like a lap before, Raikkonen complained over the radio about the dangerous driving style of Verstappen. However, the stewards did not issue a penalty against Verstappen.

Vettel meanwhile overtook Palmer, who was informed by radio that his tires were overheating and that he had to drive more slowly. As a result, he lost other positions. Vettel overtook Grosjean on lap 16, and Kwjat one lap later. Grosjean also fell behind Massa. Verstappen came to the pits and switched to the soft mix.

Hamilton caught up with Hulkenberg and overtook him on lap 18, making him third. On lap 21, Hamilton switched to the soft mix again. Nasr received a five-second time penalty for gaining an advantage by leaving the track and overtaking Ocon.

On the 23rd lap, Hülkenberg, Alonso and Vettel changed tires, all of them switched to medium . The McLaren mechanics changed the tires at Alonso faster than they did at Hülkenberg, so that both of them drove through the pit lane side by side. There was a slight contact at the pit exit, but Hulkenberg stayed in front. One lap later, Pérez and Räikkönen changed tires. Pérez immediately overtook Verstappen, who also pushed him off the track. However, Pérez stayed ahead.

In the 25th lap Ricciardo switched to Medium , one lap later Rosberg too. Vettel meanwhile overtook Verstappen, who initially countered and stayed in front. One lap later, Vettel and Bottas passed Verstappen one after the other, who then drove to the pits and let Soft pull up again . Pérez first overtook Massa on lap 29, then also Alonso one lap later and was now fifth.

On lap 32, Hamilton changed tires again, this time back to medium . He dropped to fourth place just behind Hulkenberg, but overtook him again one lap later. Vettel braked himself when attacking Massa so that he passed him again. One lap later, Vettel finally passed Massa. He quickly pulled away from him and caught up with Alonso, whom he also overtook three laps later. Hamilton drove the fastest laps of the race at this point, but was no longer within striking distance of Ricciardo. Massa had to let Bottas and Raikkonen pass in the last laps.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Ricciardo and Hamilton. It was the 20th victory for Rosberg in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the sixth of the season. Ricciardo achieved the fourth podium finish of the season, the third in a row. Hamilton reached the tenth podium in the thirteenth race of the season. The remaining points were achieved by Hülkenberg, Pérez, Vettel, Alonso, Bottas, Raikkonen and Massa.

The first three places in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
