The 1985 Belgian Grand Prix took place on September 15 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the 13th race of the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

On the weekend after the Italian Grand Prix , the race in Belgium was rescheduled, which had to be postponed at the beginning of June after the start of official training because the asphalt was broken several times.

At Zakspeed , the German Formula 1 debutant Christian Danner drove instead of the injured Jonathan Palmer .

training

During the first free practice session, Niki Lauda had an accident and broke a wrist. Therefore he had to forego participating in the rest of the race weekend.

McLaren -Pilot Alain Prost qualified for the pole position in front of Ayrton Senna at Lotus and Nelson Piquet on Brabham and the two Ferrari pilots Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson .

The first 20 drivers on the grid completed their fastest laps in less than two minutes. The first 21 drivers achieved average speeds of over 200 km / h.

run

On race day it rained until shortly before the start. As a result, the track was initially still damp and all the drivers started the race on rain tires.

Senna took the lead before the first corner. Piquet also got to Prost past, but turned in the hairpin La souce . Prost and the other opponents were able to just avoid the standing Brabham, so that although there was no accident, there was a certain delay. Senna, who was the only one ahead of Piquet at the time of the spin, profited from this and finished the first lap with a clear lead, which Prost was able to catch up during the following laps. Mansell followed in third place ahead of Johansson after Alboreto had dropped to eighth place due to handling problems and finally had to retire with a damaged clutch.

After a few laps, almost all of the drivers headed for their pits to have slicks fitted. This led to brief shifts in position. Among other things, Elio de Angelis took the lead for one lap before he made a pit stop and gave the top spot back to his team-mate Senna.

Mansell managed to keep second place despite a spin on lap ten. Keke Rosberg , who had been in third place for a few laps, had to leave this position to Alain Prost after an unscheduled pit stop on lap 33. In the meantime, Senna was able to extend his lead during another rain shower. He won ahead of Mansell, Prost and Rosberg as well as Thierry Boutsen and Derek Warwick .
