Reports
background
During the four weeks between the Monaco Grand Prix were and the Canadian Grand Prix should actually the Belgian Grand Prix at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps will be held. The teams and drivers were all present and started training. Michele Alboreto qualified for pole position. During the second day of training, however, it turned out that the track surface that had been renewed in the run-up to the event burst open in places. Since this represented a massive safety risk, it was decided for the first time in the history of Formula 1 to break off a race weekend after the start of the official timed practice. The race was postponed to a later point in the season and the teams departed.
The Zakspeed team decided in favor of further development work on the vehicle and engine against participating in the two overseas races in Canada and the USA .
François Hesnault had a serious accident during test drives on the Paul Ricard Circuit in southern France, in which he was briefly trapped in the cockpit by safety fences that had wrapped around his vehicle. In view of these impressions, he decided to end his Formula 1 career. He was replaced on the Brabham team by Marc Surer .
training
The two Lotus drivers formed the front row of the grid, with Elio de Angelis taking pole position from Ayrton Senna . Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson's two Ferraris followed, ahead of Alain Prost and Derek Warwick .
run
Up to the sixth lap, the two Lotus 97T formed a double lead. But then Senna had to go to the pit due to damage to the turbocharger. Alboreto profited from this by taking second place and catching up on the leader de Angelis, whom he was finally able to overtake on lap 16 with a remarkable maneuver on the outside of a curve.
On the 50th lap, Alboreto's team-mate Johansson also managed to overtake de Angelis. He secured the Ferrari team its first double victory since the Dutch Grand Prix in 1983 . In the end, Alain Prost took third place ahead of Keke Rosberg , Elio de Angelis and Nigel Mansell .
