training
In the first free time, Coulthard set the fastest time ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello . In the second free practice session, the first three positions remained unchanged.
Qualifying
In qualifying, Michael Schumacher was the fastest driver, who thus took pole position . Coulthard followed in second place in front of Barrichello.
Warm up
In the warm-up, the Ferrari drivers took a double lead. Michael Schumacher led the timesheet ahead of Barrichello and Häkkinen.
run
Shortly before the start, Coulthard's engine died. The mechanics restarted the engine and Coulthard started the race from his original starting position. At the start, Coulthard got into the race better than Michael Schumacher, who started from pole position. However, the Ferrari driver pulled over and kept the lead. Behind the first two, several drivers didn't get off to a good start, so that Jacques Villeneuve took third position. Barrichello also benefited from Villeneuve's good start. He was overtaken by Häkkinen at first, but passed him again in the crowd and took fourth position.
Michael Schumacher and Coulthard gradually moved away from the front because Villeneuve held up the rest of the field in third position. Häkkinen tried to overtake Barrichello but was unsuccessful. On the eleventh lap, Coulthard was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty because the mechanics did not leave the car in time to restart the engine. He dropped back to tenth place and found himself in a crowd that had formed behind Ricardo Zonta .
After Johnny Herbert retired on lap 15 with a gearbox failure, Barrichello finally managed to drive past Villeneuve on lap 17. He was 19 seconds behind the leading team-mate. On the 24th lap, Coulthard tried to overtake Jos Verstappen . They both touched. Verstappen fell back to 19th, Coulthard to 12th place. On the same lap, Jarno Trulli managed to overtake Zonta and caught up with Heinz-Harald Frentzen . While Michael Schumacher held his lead of 20 seconds at the front, Trulli overtook his team-mate Frentzen on lap 27. One lap later, Häkkinen also managed to pass Villeneuve and take third position. After Michael Schumacher suddenly lost time per lap, the team decided to make a pit stop. Barrichello thus took the lead. Schumacher kept the position in front of Hakkinen, who caught up. However, as Häkkinen was unable to overtake his rival, he pitted on lap 42. On the next lap, Barrichello also made his pit stop and Michael Schumacher took the lead again. In the meantime, Frentzen, Nick Heidfeld , Alesi and Mika Salo were out with technical problems.
In the 44th lap it finally started to rain. Villeneuve and Giancarlo Fisichella pitted at this point. While Fisichella opted for rain tires, Villeneuve kept dry tires. Häkkinen pitted again and was almost a minute behind Michael Schumacher after his pit stop. Schumacher made his stop on the next lap and kept the lead. Barrichello also pitted and had to wait a bit. As a result, he fell behind Fisichella, who took second place, but stayed ahead of Häkkinen.
After Pedro de la Rosa was eliminated after a collision with Pedro Diniz , Fisichella made a mistake on lap 50 and Barrichello took second place. In the 56th lap, Verstappen took fifth place from Trulli. While Barrichello caught up on Michael Schumacher, there was a duel between Villeneuve and Coulthard on the 64th lap. At first Villeneuve overtook Coulthard, but was immediately overtaken again by Coulthard. The next time he tried to overtake Villeneuves, he braked so late that he collided with Ralf Schumacher . Both drivers retired, as did Marc Gené , who spun off the track on the same lap. For his part, Coulthard tried to drive past Wurz. While attempting to overtake he touched Wurz, who then had to pit. Coulthard drove on and caught up with Trulli. But he did not succeed in another overtaking maneuver.
Michael Schumacher finally won the race by a narrow margin over Barrichello. Fisichella came third. The other points went to Häkkinen, Verstappen and Trulli.
In the drivers 'world championship, Michael Schumacher extended his lead over Coulthard and Ferrari also increased the lead in the constructors' championship.
