The Sauber C19 was a Formula 1 racing car from Red Bull Sauber Petronas and was used in the 2000 Formula 1 season .
technology
The engine supplier was Ferrari with a 3.0-liter V10 engine. However, he was named Petronas due to an agreement with the main sponsor . Bridgestone provided the tires .
A special feature was the suspension: For the first time, a double keel suspension was used on the front axle in Formula 1 (the pure test vehicle Honda RA099 from the previous year, however, already had this innovation). This means the suspension point of the lower front wishbone , which on the C19 was no longer centered in a simple form for the suspensions on both sides. Instead, two keels were used - one on each side of the vehicle. Aerodynamic advantages were expected from this solution.
driver
The drivers of the C19 were Pedro Diniz and Mika Salo . They contested 16 of the 17 races of the 2000 season. Only at the Brazilian Grand Prix did Sauber withdraw its vehicles after qualifying because there were problems with the rear wing.
Advertising and painting
The main sponsors were the Malaysian mineral oil company Petronas and the Austrian beverage manufacturer Red Bull .
The paintwork was very similar to that of previous years. Based on the main colors of the sponsors, the lower part of the chassis was in Petronas cyan , the upper part in Redbull blue . The yellow tone of the nose was also the same as that of the beverage manufacturer. There was writing on the rear wing and Red Bull logos on the engine cover. On the side pods there were letters from Petronas.
2000 season
Start of the season with problems
The season didn't start well at first. In the first race, Diniz retired with a gearbox damage. Salo drove a good race and finished sixth. After the race, the race stewards discovered an illegal front wing - the point placement was then revoked. In the following race, Diniz and Salo qualified in positions 20 and 22. However, Sauber withdrew his vehicles due to problems with the rear wing for safety reasons.
First successes
In the third race in San Marino, Mika Salo managed to get the first point of the season with a sixth place. Diniz finished the race in eighth. In the three subsequent races, none of the drivers finished with points. With two seventh places, however, they only narrowly failed. In the seventh race of the season, the Monaco Grand Prix , Mika Salo scored two more points for Sauber with fifth place.
Further points
After two further races without points in Canada and France, Mika Salo scored further points in Austria and Germany with a sixth and a fifth place. Up to this point Diniz was still without points.
Mediocre until the end
In the remaining six races none of the drivers managed to get any further points. However, both were consistently in the top ten.
In total, the C19 retired nine times in 16 Grand Prix. The best placements were two fifth places. At the end of the season, Sauber had six championship points and thus achieved eighth place in the constructors' championship.
