The Hangar-7 on the east side of the Salzburg airport is a multifunctional building , which is a collection of historical aircraft, helicopters and Formula 1 racing cars of the entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz hosts. The steel frame has a clear glass shell throughout. The flat but slightly sloping ellipsoid is cut at an angle at the hangar door and is penetrated by two cylindrical towers at the opposite entrance.

The building serves as an exhibition space and, with its “Ikarus” restaurant, two bars, an outdoor lounge and a café, as an event location and meeting point.

History and construction

When planning began in October 1999, Hangar-7 was originally designed as the home of the Flying Bulls , whose fleet had become too large for the space available at Innsbruck Airport at the end of the 1990s . The hangar was planned by the Austrian architect Volkmar Burgstaller, construction work on the site east of the runway at Salzburg Airport began in January 2001. On August 22, 2003, the building was officially opened.

With free entry, the building attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually.

For the restoration and maintenance of the flying machines, the somewhat smaller, similarly shaped Hangar-8 was built north-northwest of Hangar-7, which is usually not accessible to visitors.

architecture

The curvature of the slightly inclined, flat, three-axis ellipsoid is associated with that of an airplane wing from the outside, and with the vault of the sky from the inside . The load-bearing steel structure, weighing 1200 tons, was built by Waagner Biro AG and, like the subsequent hangar-8 building, based on a design by ATELIER Volkmar Burgstaller . 1754 glass panels - 380 tons of special glass - also form the transparent outer cladding on the 2 cylindrical towers on both sides of the entrance. The steel and glass ellipsoid, cut off at an angle with the hangar door, extends over 100 meters in length, 14.5 m in height and 67 m in width.

Supply and disposal takes place via a street ramp in the SSO into the basement.

A Douglas DC-6B is the museum's largest exhibit and the Flying Bulls' largest aircraft. The plane is the former presidential plane of the Yugoslav Marshal and later President Tito . Due to the height of the vertical tail of the machine had to be built to be able to drive around the machine in the hangar above the Hangartors a folding element.

The guest chef concept has been implemented since the end of 2003, by Roland Trettl until 2013, and by Trettl's companion Martin Klein since 2014 . Every month a different international star chef takes on the individual design of the menu. Under the patronage of Eckart Witzigmann , many chefs from the world's best restaurants have accepted the invitation to Salzburg, including René Redzepi , Rainer Becker, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Xavier Pellicier, Carlo Cracco, Grant Achatz, Quique Dacosta , Sergio Herman , Harald Wohlfahrt and as a semi-professional chef Gérard Depardieu .

With the guest chef on the kitchen team, the cooking style changes monthly. In addition, a monthly episode of the series The Best Chefs in the World - Guest at Ikarus is produced and broadcast on the Austrian private broadcaster ServusTV . Past programs are also available in Germany in the media library. The chefs accompanied by the camera in 2018 included Paolo Casagrande, Nick Bril from The Jane restaurant in Antwerp, David Kinch and Mats Vollmer in Malmö.

The Carpe Diem Lounge-Café offers a direct view of the historical aircraft and exhibits in Hangar-7, which are only a few meters - and only separated by a glass front - in front of the café tables.

Mayday bar

The Mayday Bar on the 2nd floor of the house offers cocktails and "Bar Food International", which is prepared by Executive Chef Martin Klein and his team.

Threesixty

The Threesixty Bar (also: Bar 360) hangs in a cylinder, which is also glazed on the floor, in the zenith of the roof vault, where 36 meridional tube struts of 18 and finally 9 wheel spokes converge at the slightly inclined pole. Both the mountain panorama and the exhibits can be seen with a 360-degree panoramic view. This bar was built later in the building and can be reached barrier-free from the gallery via a curved walkway. According to building regulations, the number of visitors is limited to 20 people.

Outdoor lounge

The restaurant concept was supplemented in 2010 by the outdoor lounge in the south, in which mainly grill specialties are offered. It is only open in the summer season when the weather is nice.

Events

Hangar-7 serves as a stage for various events. In addition to music and art events, Hangar-7 also serves as a venue for TV formats from Servus TV , such as sports and talk from Hangar-7 and Talk in Hangar-7 . Hangar-7 can also be rented for private events.
