In the late 1940s, the US Air Force was looking for a new trainer aircraft to replace the North American AT-6 (known as "Harvard" in service with the Royal Air Force ). North American presented its design NA-159 after the tender in 1948, of which two prototypes were then ordered and as the XT-28 began flight tests on September 26, 1949.

In 1950 the US Air Force ordered 266 machines of the T-28A series (with the 588 kW seven-cylinder Wright R-1300-1A radial engine and two-bladed propeller), which should serve for basic training. A total of 1194 pieces were produced from this series, which were also sold and used outside the USA.

From 1954, the US Navy version of the T-28B, which had its maiden flight on April 6, 1953, was produced. She got the more powerful Wright R-1820-26 engine with 1047 kW of power and a three-blade propeller. A total of 489 machines of this version were built.

Later there were various variants. For example the T-28C, which used the same engine as the T-28B and, thanks to the reinforced rear fuselage, airbrakes and catch hooks, was also suitable for aircraft carriers. It had its maiden flight on September 19, 1955 and 299 copies were built by 1957. The T-28D "Nomad" (also AT-28) was a reworked A version with a Wright R-1820-56S engine and six underwing stations for up to 1814 kg weapon load, which should serve COIN missions. A total of 321 machines (mostly T-28A, but also T-28B or C) from North American and 72 from Fairchild were converted to this stand. A version modified in France (with R-1820-76A, three-bladed propeller and reinforced wings) was designated the T-28S "Fennec", a version converted to a reconnaissance aircraft as the RT-28D, drone control aircraft as the T-28BD, and civil aircraft as the T-28R Nomad . With the T-CH-1, Taiwan built a variant with a turboprop engine , of which fifty copies were produced.

The US Air Force decommissioned the T-28 from 1956 in favor of the Beechcraft T-34 Mentor , with the machines being sold to many different air forces around the world. It remained in service with the US Navy until 1984.

commitment

Several versions were successfully used as ground attack aircraft from November 1961 (initially eight T-28Bs) in South Vietnam , by France in Algeria and during the civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the Congo crisis in 1964.

Numerous planes still fly today, and they can often be found at air shows.

Three-sided tear

The T-28 is a low-wing aircraft with a tandem cockpit (flight instructor and student sit one behind the other). It has a three-part retractable chassis, each with single tires. External loads can be carried under the wings at two underwing stations for training purposes.
