Status: end of the 2006 season |
The Red Bull RB2 was the second Formula 1 racing car from Red Bull Racing to take part in all 18 races of the 2006 Formula 1 season .
Technology and development
Red Bull developed a completely new vehicle for the 2006 season. In addition, as part of the conversion from V10 to V8 engines, the engine manufacturer changed from Cosworth to Ferrari . When it comes to tires, Red Bull remained loyal to the French tire manufacturer Michelin . During the season there were constant overheating and stability problems with the Ferrari engine. When designing the RB2, the then designer Mark Smith hadn't taken into account that the Ferrari engine needed more cooling. As an emergency solution, large cooling openings were cut into the chassis so that the warm air could escape from the engine compartment. After the season, the Ferrari engines were handed over to Toro Rosso and Renault was hired as an engine partner.
Painting and sponsorship
The basic color of the RB2 was dark blue. Large sponsor stickers from Red Bull were attached to the bonnet. The side pods were adorned with large lettering from the energy drink manufacturer.
driver
In terms of the driver line-up, the Scotsman David Coulthard and the Austrian Christian Klien were retained , with Klien having to hand over the cockpit to the Dutchman Robert Doornbos in the last three races of the season . In addition to Doornbos, the German Michael Ammermüller was also a test driver of the RB2, but did not race.
