After the Chinese Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 0 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 53 points over Giancarlo Fisichella . In the constructors' championship, Renault was 1 point ahead of Ferrari and 78 points over McLaren-Mercedes .

With Michael Schumacher (six times), Rubens Barrichello and Kimi Räikkönen (once each) three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

In the first free practice session, which took place under rainy conditions, five Friday test drivers were ahead. Anthony Davidson achieved the fastest time ahead of Neel Jani and Sebastian Vettel . In the second free practice session, when the track dried out, Fisichella set the fastest lap ahead of Felipe Massa and Schumacher. In the third free practice session, on a consistently dry track, Michael Schumacher took the lead from his brother Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button .

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Massa set the fastest time. The Super Aguri and Red Bull drivers as well as Tiago Monteiro and Scott Speed ​​were eliminated.
