The Japanese Grand Prix in 2013 (officially 2013 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix ) took place on 13 October at the Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka place and was the 15th race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2013 .

Reports

background

After the Korean Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 77 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 105 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 118 points ahead of Ferrari and 119 points ahead of Mercedes .

At the Japanese Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Vettel (three times), Alonso (twice), Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Garry Connelly (AUS), Takashi Mitarashi (JPN) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA).

On race day, the drivers remembered the former Formula 1 test driver María de Villota, who died on Friday, in front of the driver parade .

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of his teammates Nico Rosberg and Vettel. Heikki Kovalainen took over the Caterham from Charles Pic in this training . Jules Bianchi had an accident on the second Degner corner. His Marussia MR02 chassis was irreparably damaged and he sustained a slight elbow injury. The trigger for the accident was that Bianchi's arm was trapped between the seat shell and the chassis. Giedo van der Garde and Pastor Maldonado were involved in other accidents . In the second free practice session, Vettel took the lead in front of his teammates Mark Webber and Rosberg. Sergio Pérez and Maldonado were uninjured in accidents.

In the third free practice session, Webber was the fastest ahead of Hamilton and Rosberg. Vettel, who came in ninth, ended up not taking part because his KERS battery was changed. Adrian Sutil slipped into the tire wall at the exit of the Spoon curve and damaged his front wing in the process.

Qualifying

The first segment of qualifying was interrupted about three minutes before the end because Jean-Éric Vergne had stopped with burning rear brakes. Romain Grosjean was the fastest driver. The Marussia and Caterham pilots, as well as Vergne and Sutil, were eliminated. In the second section, Vettel was the fastest. The Williams drivers as well as Daniel Ricciardo , Esteban Gutiérrez , Paul di Resta and Pérez were eliminated. In the final segment, Webber set the fastest time and achieved his first pole position of the season. He also managed to beat Vettel for the first time in qualifying in 2013. Vettel was second, Hamilton third. Vettel had KERS problems in the last section of qualifying, as in training, and he had to forego the additional performance provided by the system in the last section.

Pic and Bianchi were given a starting place penalty of ten starting places due to three warnings from the previous races. Sutil was moved five positions back due to a premature gear change.

Since Pic had run over a red light in the first segment of qualifying and he had already noticed a similar violation in the previous race, he was given a drive-through penalty for the race, which he had to complete within the first five laps. It was the first time a drive-through penalty had been given before a race.

run

Grosjean started best from fourth place and took the lead straight away from Webber and Vettel. Grosjean passed the other pilots on the inside lane. Vettel, who was overtaken by Hamilton on the right and Grosjean on the left, touched Hamilton's rear tire with his front wing. Hamilton's tire and Vettel's front wing were damaged. While Vettel drove on without repairs, Hamilton suffered a tire damage and pitted to change tires after the first lap. In addition, there was a collision between Bianchi, Chilton and van der Garde in the first corner, in which Bianchi and van der Garde were eliminated. Van der Garde was trapped between the two Marussia drivers, lost his front wing and as a result drove into the tire wall. In van der Garde's impact, more than 20 g acted  on his body. Pic received a drive-through penalty on the first lap, which had already been pronounced before the race.

While Grosjean was leading the race in front of the two Red Bull drivers, Hamilton gave up after seven laps in the pits because his vehicle was no longer intact and pulled to the right. At that time there were several battles for positions in midfield. Raikkonen passed Button and Rosberg, Felipe Massa , Alonso and Nico Hülkenberg were close together in the duel for fourth place. Ferrari asked Massa at this point to let Alonso pass, but he ignored this order as he did not consider a team order to be correct at this stage of the race.

The pit stop phase began on lap eight. The leading group waited a little longer. Webber pitted in the eleventh, Grosjean in the twelfth and Vettel in the 14th lap. The pit stops did not change anything in the first three positions. Rosberg almost collided with Pérez when he stopped because he was let go too early. As a result, he received a drive-through penalty. Hulkenberg passed the Ferraris of Massa and Alonso through the stops and was in fifth position behind Ricciardo, who started on the harder tire compound and was not yet in the pits.

In the 20th lap there were several position changes in this group. Hülkenberg drove past Ricciardo in front of the 130R and Alonso also overtook Ricciardo a little later after he had already passed Massa. Also in the 130R , Raikkonen passed Gutiérrez and Rosberg passed Button.

In the 25th lap, Webber pitted for the second time. He was on a three-stop strategy; in contrast to Grosjean and Vettel, who had planned two stops. Grosjean pitted on lap 29 and passed the lead to Vettel. Although he followed the same strategy as Grosjean, Vettel stayed on the track until lap 37 and only then changed his tires for the last time. Webber took the lead. In the meantime, Ricciardo had received a drive-through penalty for overtaking Sutil in which he had left the track in the 130R , and Massa had to serve a drive-through penalty because he was too fast in the pit lane. During the second pit stops, both McLaren drivers had a problem with the rear left wheel nut, so these stops took a little longer.

After his stop, Vettel quickly caught up with Grosjean with the fresher tires and overtook Grosjean on lap 41 on the start-finish straight. Webber, who was about 15 seconds ahead of Vettel, pitted one lap later, so that Vettel took over the lead of the race again. Webber chose the softer tire compound for his last stint in contrast to Vettel and Grosjean. Webber also caught up with Grosjean in the next few laps, but did not get past at first. On the penultimate lap, Webber was able to overtake Grosjean in the first corner. There were also several duels on the route. Pérez suffered a tire damage after a duel with Rosberg in which the tire and front wing touched. In the last ten laps Hülkenberg was overtaken initially by Alonso and shortly before the finish also by Raikkonen. On the last lap Button passed Massa.

Vettel eventually won his fifth race in a row. He is the sixth pilot after Alberto Ascari , Jack Brabham , Jim Clark , Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher , who succeeded in this. Webber finished second ahead of Grosjean, who scored a podium finish for the first time this season without being beaten by team-mate Raikkonen. Alonso finished fourth and prevented Vettel from winning the title early. Raikkonen finished fifth. The top 10 were completed by Hülkenberg, Gutiérrez, Rosberg, Button and Massa. It was Gutiérrez's first points and his first top 10 finish in Formula 1.

Vettel built his lead in the drivers' world championship to 90 points over Alonso. To win the title on their own, Vettel was ten points short of four remaining races. Alonso would have to win at least three of the four remaining races and finish second to win the world championship, while Vettel should get a maximum of two points. The first three positions also remained unchanged in the constructors' world championship. Red Bull also had the opportunity to win the world title in the following race on its own.

Comments from the first three drivers

“It was a very rewarding win today - a great feeling. I love this track and it's fantastic to win here. To be honest, we got off to a terrible start. We found ourselves in third place and wanted to delay the first stint after that. After I passed Romain I had great traction and the only danger was Mark stuck behind Romain. We were able to keep our lead until the end.
The championship is a big goal, of course, but the season is still very long and the best way to bag it is not to think about it. I am happy that I can now go home and relax for a while before we go to India. It's an impressive country and I'm looking forward to racing there in a couple of weeks. "

- Sebastian Vettel

“We got a bit off guard from Romain's great start. I wanted to put pressure on him so I could win. Sebastian was on a different strategy that paid off in the end. It's difficult to know which strategy was the right one, but we tried to cover Romain. I did my best and in the end it was a good result. "

“Today was a very, very good race. What a start! It was great to pass both Red Bulls like this. It will be one of my best memories of the year. The car was fantastic on the first set of tires and we managed to pull away. But the Red Bull were able to catch up with us again later. In the end, we were the only car that the cops nearly got. It was a great home race for my engineer; it's always nice to come to Japan and it's really great to be back on the podium. "

- Romain Grosjean
