Reports

background

After the Indian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' championship with 115 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 139 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen . Red Bull-Renault led in the constructors' championship with 157 points ahead of Mercedes and 161 points ahead of Ferrari . Vettel and Red Bull-Renault were already established as world champions ahead of time.

At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Lotus used two different specifications of the Lotus E21 at this Grand Prix . Romain Grosjean drove the version with a longer wheelbase that was used by both pilots in the previous races, while Raikkonen used the version with a shorter wheelbase that was used at the beginning of the season.

With Vettel (twice), Lewis Hamilton and Raikkonen (once each), all former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Khaled Bin Shaiban (ARE), Martin Donnelly (GBR), Tim Mayer (USA) and Lars Österlind (SWE) acted as race stewards .

A partial solar eclipse was observed during the race .

training

In the first free practice, Grosjean was the fastest driver ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. This training took James Calado the Force India of Adrian Sutil , Heikki Kovalainen the Caterham of Giedo van der Garde and Rodolfo González the Marussia of Max Chilton . In the second free practice, Vettel took the lead from Mark Webber and Hamilton. Several pilots had problems with their braking systems.

In the third free practice session, the first three positions remained unchanged. In an accident in the first corner, Jules Bianchi damaged his vehicle so badly that the gearbox had to be changed, so that he was moved back on the starting grid.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Hamilton set the fastest time. The second and the eighteenth were less than a second apart. The Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutiérrez were eliminated. In the second segment, Rosberg took the lead. The Williams pilots as well as Jean-Éric Vergne , Jenson Button , Paul di Resta and Alonso were eliminated. In the final section, Webber set the fastest time and achieved pole position in front of Vettel and Rosberg.

After qualifying, a technical check on Raikkonen's Lotus revealed that the underbody did not conform to the rules, so that it was excluded from the classification. Lotus stated that the subfloor was damaged in contact with a curb. However, this could not be proven. Raikkonen was allowed to start the race.

run

Vettel won the race ahead of his teammates Webber and Rosberg. Vettel led the race throughout and crossed the finish line with a lead of over 30 seconds.

Fernando Alonso suffered minor back injuries after driving over the curbs off the track.
