The 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Magyar Nagydíj 2013 ) took place on July 28th at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród and was the tenth race of the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the German Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 34 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 41 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 67 points ahead of Mercedes and 70 points ahead of Ferrari .

Lotus decided to commemorate the victims of the railway accident in Santiago de Compostela for this Grand Prix with a special paint job on the rear wing end plate.

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . These are new developments in the tire compounds that were used for the first time at the Young Driver Days before the Grand Prix. The new tire compounds combine the hardness of the previous 2013 tires with the basic structure of the 2012 tires. Pirelli originally planned to use the 2013 tire compounds Hard and Medium. But this was changed with the redesign of the tires.

With Lewis Hamilton (three times), Jenson Button (twice), Alonso, Raikkonen and Mark Webber (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Garry Connelly (AUS), Lajos Herczeg (HUN) and Allan McNish (GBR).

training

In the first free practice, Vettel was the fastest pilot ahead of Webber and Raikkonen. In this training Rodolfo González took over the Marussia from Max Chilton . In the second free practice session, the Red Bull drivers stayed ahead. Romain Grosjean came third. In this training, the drivers mainly dealt with understanding the new tire compounds.

The third free practice session was canceled prematurely. Shortly before the end, Sergio Pérez lost control of his car in the twelfth corner and hit a wall of tires sideways. Esteban Gutiérrez was not used at all due to an unscheduled engine change. Grosjean set the fastest lap ahead of Alonso and Pérez.

Qualifying

In the first segment of qualifying, Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap. The Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Paul di Resta and Gutiérrez were eliminated. In the second section, Rosberg stayed ahead. The Williams pilots, Jean-Éric Vergne , Button, Nico Hülkenberg and Adrian Sutil were eliminated. In the third part, Hamilton set the fastest time and achieved the third pole position in a row ahead of Vettel and Grosjean.

run

Hamilton scored his first win for Mercedes ahead of Raikkonen and Vettel. The pilots in the front positions used several different strategies.
