The 1987 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 9th at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest and was the ninth race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
The same field of participants that had contested the German Grand Prix two weeks earlier also competed in Hungary.
Ayrton Senna announced that he would no longer contest the 1988 season for Lotus , but as Alain Prost's team-mate at McLaren . Lotus team boss Peter Warr then signed Nelson Piquet because he was dissatisfied that Frank Williams did not want to give him a clear number one status over Nigel Mansell .
training
Mansell was the pole-setter for the seventh time after the ninth qualifying of the season. Behind them, Gerhard Berger qualified for second place on the grid, ahead of Piquet and Prost. Michele Alboreto and Ayrton Senna formed the third row.
run
While Mansell was converting his pole position into a lead, Berger was overtaken by Piquet after a comparatively bad start. The Austrian countered successfully in the first corner. Shortly afterwards, Piquet lost third place to Alboreto, putting two Ferrari drivers behind the leading Williams von Mansell.
After twelve laps, Berger had to retire due to a differential damage. On lap 19, Piquet established a one-two Williams lead with an overtaking maneuver against Alboreto.
In lap 44, Alboreto, the second Ferrari driver, also retired due to a technical defect. Senna took over the third position. Thierry Boutsen followed in fourth place ahead of Alain Prost. Between these two there was a change of position on lap 59.
Mansell had to retire five laps before the end of the race because a wheel nut had come loose. For the second time in a row, Nelson Piquet benefited from the failure of a leader in the final stages of the race and won without a fight. Ayrton Senna was second ahead of Alain Prost, Thierry Boutsen, Riccardo Patrese and Derek Warwick .
