Reports
background
During the three weeks between the opening race in Brazil and the second World Championship round of the year in Imola , Zakspeed completed a first copy of the new Type 871 , which was piloted by Martin Brundle . The new Minardi M187 and the March 871 were also used for the first time . The Ligier team was after had become necessary in the short term reconstruction of the JS29 on Megatron engines with the two pilots René Arnoux and Piercarlo Ghinzani late in the season aboard, as well as the new team Larrousse that with a Lola chassis and Ford-Cosworth - Naturally aspirated engine. Philippe Alliot was signed as a regular driver. Gabriele Tarquini made her debut this weekend at the wheel of a second Osella .
training
After setting the fastest time of the day, Nelson Piquet had a serious accident on the first day of training as a result of a puncture in the fast Tamburello corner. Formula 1 doctor Sid Watkins then banned him from participating in the race. For safety reasons, Goodyear agreed to fly in new tires overnight that were better suited to the track characteristics.
On Saturday Ayrton Senna secured pole position in the Lotus 99T ahead of Nigel Mansell in the Williams FW11B . Benetton -Pilot Teo Fabi and Prost on McLaren followed in the second row before the two Ferrari pilots Michele Alboreto and Gerhard Berger .
run
During the second lap, Mansell took over the top position in the Tosa curve from Ayrton Senna , who had initially converted his pole position into a lead. In the fourth lap, Prost also passed Senna and caught up with Mansell until he had to retire on lap 15 due to an electrical fault. In the meantime, Alboreto had overtaken Senna and was therefore in second place.
Mansell stopped at the pits earlier than planned to have his tires changed. As a result, Alboreto and Senna were in the lead for a short time until they in turn made their pit stops. Riccardo Patrese was in second place at this point because he made his stop relatively late. However, due to excessive fuel consumption, he had to drop significantly in the final phase.
Mansell won with almost half a minute ahead of Senna, who benefited from a loss of turbo pressure on Alboreto's Ferrari. The Italian crossed the finish line in third, ahead of Stefan Johansson . Martin Brundle scored the first two World Championship points for Zakspeed in fifth. Satoru Nakajima was sixth and was the first Japanese to win a World Championship point.
