The 1987 Australian Grand Prix took place on November 15 as the 16th and final race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship on the Adelaide Street Circuit .

Since Nigel Mansell was still out due to injury after his accident in training for the Japanese Grand Prix , Riccardo Patrese , whose move from Brabham to Williams for the 1988 season was already certain, was already signed for the 1987 season finale. At Brabham, Formula 1 newcomer Stefano Modena was used instead .

Gerhard Berger qualified for pole position in front of Alain Prost , Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna . This was followed by Thierry Boutsen ago Michele Alboreto .

Just like two weeks earlier in Japan, Gerhard Berger achieved an undisputed start-to-finish victory. Until the 34th lap, Piquet followed in second place ahead of Prost, who had passed Senna on the second lap.
During the pit stops halfway through the race, Senna finished second, followed by Berger's team-mate Alboreto. Boutsen crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Jonathan Palmer and Yannick Dalmas .
After the race, Senna was disqualified because of a non-compliant braking system. So the other pilots moved up one place each. Roberto Moreno received a world championship point. Since the Larrousse team had only registered one vehicle for the World Championship at the beginning of the season, the second driver Yannick Dalmas who was added later did not receive any points.
