The 1987 Belgian Grand Prix took place on May 17th at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the third race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Gabriele Tarquini's assignment in the cockpit of a second Osella was discontinued, so the team started again with just one car. At Zakspeed , both factory drivers have now been equipped with the new 871 .

Nelson Piquet , who was injured in training for the San Marino Grand Prix , was able to compete again.

training

Nigel Mansell qualified for pole position with a lap time that was almost 1.5 seconds shorter than his second-placed Williams team- mate Nelson Piquet. This was followed by the two Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto ahead of reigning World Champion Alain Prost at McLaren and Benetton -Pilot Thierry Boutsen .

Due to rainy weather on Friday, all pilots completed their fastest training laps during the second qualifying session on Saturday.

run

Mansell took the lead ahead of Senna, Piquet, Alboreto and Prost.

At the beginning of the second lap, Philippe Streiff lost control of his Tyrrell DG016 in the Raidillon curve at the exit of Eau Rouge . He then hit the road so hard that the rear part of the car and engine tore off. When the wreck was thrown back onto the track, the second Tyrrell pilot Jonathan Palmer collided with it. Although both vehicles were badly damaged, both pilots were uninjured. The race was stopped to evacuate the scene of the accident.

When restarting, Senna took the lead from Mansell. When he tried to overtake Senna on the first lap, the two collided and spun. Senna dropped out. Mansell was initially able to continue the race in second behind his team-mate until consequential damage forced him to give up on lap 17. Then Alboreto took second place in front of Prost.

In the tenth lap, Piquet and Alboreto were eliminated due to technical problems, so that Prost, who had previously placed third, took the lead without a fight. He was followed by Teo Fabi , followed by Stefan Johansson and Thierry Boutsen . On lap 17, Johansson extended Prost's lead to a McLaren one-two.

On lap 30 Thierry Boutsen was unable to defend his third place against Andrea de Cesaris . He was eliminated five laps later, so that Eddie Cheever crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Satoru Nakajima and René Arnoux .
