The 1990 Belgian Grand Prix took place on August 26th at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the eleventh race of the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
The Onyx team withdrew completely from Formula 1. Gregor Foitek had already announced his retirement two weeks earlier during training for the Hungarian Grand Prix . JJ Lehto did not find a new job at first and had to forego participating in the remaining races of the 1990 season. The rest of the field remained unchanged.
training
Due to the withdrawal of Onyx, the Ligier team was spared participation in the pre-qualification. Bertrand Gachot also benefited from the loss of two competitors , who was able to reach regular qualifying for the first time this season with the Coloni C3B .
The two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger dueled for pole position, which ultimately went to Senna with a lap time that was around six tenths of a second shorter. They were followed by Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen before Nigel Mansell and Alessandro Nannini and Riccardo Patrese and Nelson Piquet .
run
While Senna took the lead over Berger, Aguri Suzuki collided with Nelson Piquet. This then collided with Nigel Mansell, whose car hit the pit wall head-on and thus partially blocked the route. While trying to avoid this obstacle, the two Lotus teammates Derek Warwick and Martin Donnelly collided with each other. In the further course of the first lap there was another collision elsewhere, namely between Satoru Nakajima and Stefano Modena . Emanuele Pirro and Nicola Larini were prevented from continuing by the blockades. As a result, the race management decided to abandon the race with the red flag.
Except for Suzuki, all drivers in repaired vehicles or T-Cars were able to participate in the restart. Senna took the lead again. This time, however, Boutsen managed to overtake Berger and take second place. Shortly afterwards, after a serious accident by Paolo Barilla in the Eau Rouge , the race was stopped again because debris from his Minardi had spread over the track.
Senna managed to defend his top position again on the third attempt. Behind him followed Berger in front of Prost, Boutsen, Patrese, Nannini, Piquet and Mansell. The latter then fell behind due to handling problems and gave up the race after 19 laps.
In the 14th lap, Prost passed Berger. Boutsen also caught up with the Austrian, which he took as an opportunity to have fresh tires fitted to the pits. Within a few laps, both Williams drivers retired due to technical defects.
A pit stop by Prost put Nannini in second place on lap 23. The French, however, pushed him back from this position four laps later. Nannini then dueled Berger for third place, which finally led to a collision between the two on lap 36. However, both were able to continue the race. Berger overtook the Italian on the 41st lap after he had made a small driving error in the Eau Rouge , and thus achieved third place behind Senna and Prost. The finish of the first three thus corresponded exactly to the world championship ranking at that time. Piquet crossed the finish line in fifth behind Nannini. Maurício Gugelmin was sixth to receive the last World Cup point of the day, which was also his first of the current season.
