Reports

background

There were no changes in the list of participants compared to the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position in front of his former teammate Alain Prost as well as Jean Alesi and Riccardo Patrese . Gerhard Berger and Thierry Boutsen formed the third row on the grid.

run

Senna took the lead from pole position. However, since Prost and Berger collided in the Mirabeau curve, the race was canceled.

With the restart, Senna was also able to defend its top position. Prost and Alesi followed before Berger, Patrese and Boutsen. Nigel Mansell , who had started from seventh place, drove slightly into Boutsen's Williams FW13B on lap 21 and then had to go to the pit to have his car repaired.

Due to an electrical fault, Prost had to give up the race after 30 laps and let Alesi take second place. Nelson Piquet was disqualified after 35 laps because he was illegally pushed by a marshal after a spin in front of the Loews curve. Berger came in third. With Patreses engine failing on lap 41, Boutsen finished fourth. Alex Caffi was fifth ahead of Eric Bernard . No other pilot reached the destination.

There was a new rule, according to which only those teams could take part in the constructors' world championship that used self-designed racing cars. Since this was not the case at Larrousse , only Éric Bernard received a point for the drivers' championship. The team was not taken into account as the actual designer of the vehicle used was the British company Lola and Larrousse was therefore considered to be a customer team.
