The 1982 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 23 and was the sixth race of the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Two weeks after the death of Gilles Villeneuve in training for the Belgian Grand Prix , Ferrari competed with just one car for Didier Pironi .

Brabham pilot Riccardo Patrese again used one of the more sophisticated BT49s , while the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet drove the newer BT50 with a BMW turbo engine .

The tire manufacturer Avon surprisingly announced its withdrawal from Formula 1. Since primarily smaller teams used tires from this manufacturer, they were most affected and had to secure remaining stocks until they found a suitable new outfitter. The March team succeeded in acquiring large parts of this remaining stock and in doing so replaced the Pirelli tires used previously . Theodore immediately switched to Goodyear .

The JS19 , first reported by the Ligier team, was declared illegal in its existing form and could only be used with modifications in accordance with the rules. This changed the driving behavior of the car drastically, which caused problems for drivers Eddie Cheever and Jacques Laffite throughout the weekend.

training

Since only 20 pilots were allowed to take part in the race, five drivers were identified in a pre-qualification and a further six drivers in the two regular qualification training courses who were not admitted.

René Arnoux secured pole position from Riccardo Patrese, Bruno Giacomelli and his Renault team- mate Alain Prost . Didier Pironi followed before Keke Rosberg , Andrea de Cesaris and Derek Daly .

run

Arnoux took the lead ahead of Giacomelli, Patrese, Prost and Pironi. Prost overtook Patrese during the first lap and, due to Giacomelli's technical failure, came second on the fourth lap.

When Arnoux retired on lap 15 after a spin, Prost took the lead from Patrese, who quickly caught up.

It wasn't until the last laps of the race, when it began to rain lightly, that there were other major changes. Rosberg, who was in fifth place, retired on lap 65 after contact with the track barrier. His team-mate Daly suffered a similar mishap on the Tabac corner on the same lap. However, he was able to continue the race even though his rear wing was damaged and his car was losing oil.

In the 74th and thus third from last lap, Prost crashed into the lane in the area of the harbor chicane at high speed. As a result, Patrese took the lead, but lost it to Pironi in the following lap due to a spin in the Loews curve. However, the latter was unable to secure victory because, like the new runner-up de Cesaris, he ran out of fuel on the last lap. As a result, Nigel Mansell was apparently in the best position to win the race. Patrese was pushed back by several marshals, however, because his car was in a dangerous place in the area of the tight hairpin bend . While rolling downhill towards the tunnel, the Italian managed to restart the car and complete the last lap on his own. When he crossed the finish line, he was initially unaware that he had won the race. It was his first Grand Prix victory. Didier Pironi was classified as second ahead of Andrea de Cesaris because of the distance he had covered. Nigel Mansell and Elio de Angelis followed in fourth and fifth in front of Derek Daly.

Prost kept his lead in the world championship despite his fourth zero number in a row.
