Reports
background
After a one-year break, another Grand Prix of the USA East took place in 1982 . However, the race was no longer held in Watkins Glen , but for the first time on a street circuit in Detroit . It was therefore also called the Detroit Grand Prix .
Two weeks after Riccardo Patreses maiden victory in Monaco and four weeks after the fatal accident of Gilles Villeneuve in Belgium , Scuderia Ferrari had signed the French Patrick Tambay as his successor. However, he was only to occupy this position at the race after next in the Netherlands , so Ferrari continued to compete in the Grand Prix of the USA East and in Canada with only one vehicle for Didier Pironi .
The Toleman team decided not to take part in the race weekend. Thus, despite the relatively narrow street circuit, no pre-qualification was necessary.
training
Jan Lammers was injured in an accident during free practice and was unable to take part in the rest of the weekend.
In good weather conditions on Saturday morning, Alain Prost drove the fastest lap in the first qualifying session. Andrea de Cesaris took second place in front of Keke Rosberg and Didier Pironi . The fifth fastest time was Manfred Winkelhock on ATS ahead of Bruno Giacomelli and the two Lotus pilots Nigel Mansell and Elio de Angelis . The reigning world champion Nelson Piquet only had the worst time due to technical problems on his Brabham BT50 and was hoping for an improvement during the second qualifying session in the afternoon. However, as it began to rain, no time improvements were possible and only a few pilots took to the track. For Piquet this meant that he was one of the two pilots, alongside Emilio de Villota , who failed to qualify for the race.
run
At the start, Prost was able to defend himself against Rosberg and turn into the first corner as the leader. Andrea de Cesaris initially defended his second place, but retired in the third round after contact with the boundary wall. Winkelhock had already done something similar one lap before. Prost was leading ahead of Rosberg, Pironi, Mansell and Giacomelli when the race was interrupted on the seventh lap due to a collision between Roberto Guerrero and Elio de Angelis. This demolition was necessary because there were numerous debris on the route, especially since Riccardo Patrese had crashed into the boundary while trying to avoid the two collided.
At the restart, Prost again defended his top position against Rosberg. However, when he began to have increasing problems with the fuel supply, the Finn was able to catch up and finally take the lead on lap 23. In the meantime, John Watson fought his way up from 17th on the grid to second in an impressive manner. By the 37th lap he caught up with Rosberg and took the lead. His team-mate Niki Lauda meanwhile managed to get past Eddie Cheever and Didier Pironi into third place. When trying to overtake Rosberg, he first collided with it and then with the wall. He dropped out. Rosberg was able to continue the race in third place behind Cheever, who had benefited from the collision. Jacques Laffite was able to take third place shortly afterwards, but fell back behind Didier Pironi, Keke Rosberg and Derek Daly by the end of the race .
Shortly before reaching the maximum duration of two hours, the race was stopped after 62 of the originally planned 70 laps.
