Reports
background
Since ATS , RAM and a few other small teams had decided not to take part in the final overseas races, the entry list for the USA Grand Prix with 27 pilots was relatively clear, so that the question of a possible pre-qualification did not arise.
The only increase came from the local private Interscope team , which reported a Penske PC4 for Formula 1 newcomer Danny Ongais .
Jean-Pierre Jarier was released from his ATS contract to represent Riccardo Patrese at Shadow , as he was taking part in a Formula 2 race that was taking place in Italy.
After Scuderia Ferrari announced that Niki Lauda would be replaced by Gilles Villeneuve from the following season , it was not clear due to disputes how many of the remaining three races Lauda, which had only been one point short of winning the title since the Italian Grand Prix , was still unclear for Scuderia Ferrari. The Lotus team also announced that they have signed Ronnie Peterson as the successor to Gunnar Nilsson for the 1978 season .
training
James Hunt , who has now achieved just as good results with the McLaren M26 as with the M23 last year, secured pole position from Hans-Joachim Stuck , who showed a strong training performance in the Brabham BT45B . His team mate John Watson completed a good training result for the Brabham team in third . Mario Andretti qualified for fourth place on the grid in the Lotus 78 ahead of Ronnie Peterson in a Tyrrell P34 and Carlos Reutemann in a Ferrari 312T2 .
run
On the wet track, Watson was the only one of the top drivers to risk a start on slicks , which meant that he fell back to the bottom of the field within a short time. Meanwhile, his teammate Stuck took the lead in front of Hunt, Andretti, Reutemann, Peterson, Lauda and Jody Scheckter . The South African found his way past three competitors during the following laps.
Still in the lead, Stuck spun on the 14th lap due to a damaged clutch. He couldn't continue the race. The resulting order at the top with Hunt in front of Andretti, Scheckter and Lauda did not change until the finish. Lauda got more than the point needed to win the title and then did not appear in the remaining two races of the season. Clay Regazzoni overtook Reutemann on lap 23 and thus achieved fifth place.
