Penske PC4

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Penske PC4 was a Formula 1 racing car that was used by Penske Racing in 1976 and ATS in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1977 .

The Penske PC4 replaced the PC3 from the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix . The racing car had a very pointed front end; the side radiators gave the car its narrow lines. The wheel suspension, the suspension and the V8 engine from Cosworth were already used in the PC3. The gearbox was also taken from the previous model.

The PC4 was the most successful Formula 1 Penske. In his second race, John Watson achieved third place at the French Grand Prix in Le Castellet . Shortly after the race, however, Watson was disqualified because the side baffles on the rear wing were 5 mm too high. Two weeks later, Watson drove the PC4 again to third place at the British Grand Prix . The highlight of the year was Watson's victory in the Austrian Grand Prix . It was the only victory for a Penske in the Formula 1 World Championship. Watson finished the World Championship in seventh overall and the Penske team finished fifth in the Constructors' Cup.

After the end of the Penske team in Formula 1, the PC4s were sold to the German racing team ATS, which used the vehicles for another year in 1977.
