Reports
background
After Mario Andretti and Brett Lunger , who had skipped the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier, returned to the field, the Lotus and Surtees teams each competed with two factory cars. Due to the absence of Jacky Ickx , who took part in the parallel 24-hour race of Le Mans and finished it victoriously, the Wolf-Williams team, on the other hand, entered with just one vehicle.
The RAM Racing team , which had also skipped the Monaco GP, now reported two customers - Brabham . The cockpit of the second car next to that of regular driver Loris Kessel was given to the Danish Formula 1 newcomer Jac Nelleman this weekend .
Penske factory driver John Watson carried out the first Grand Prix outing of the new car called PC4 this weekend .
training
Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler already proved the competitiveness of the Tyrrell P34 with six wheels, which has so far been critically judged by the experts, by reaching the starting positions one and four . With a slightly further developed Lotus 77 , Mario Andretti achieved the second fastest training time ahead of Chris Amon , who surprisingly managed to qualify for third place on the grid with the Ensign N176 .
Only in fifth place on the grid followed with Niki Lauda, one of the previously mostly dominating Ferrari 312T2s . Local Gunnar Nilsson confirmed the upward trend at Lotus with sixth place.
run
Andretti took the lead from the front row in front of the two Tyrrell from Scheckter and Depailler as well as Ensign driver Amon.
Both factory drivers were unable to realize the potential of the modified Lotus 77 in this race. In front of his home crowd, Nilsson missed his chances of a good placement early on by spinning the pit wall, which meant the end for him. Due to an early start, the race stewards imposed a one-minute time penalty on Andretti, which his team immediately informed him on a pit board. The US-American was not discouraged and tried to get as big a lead as possible at the top so that a good final result seemed possible even after adding the announced penalty minute. On the 49th lap, however, he retired due to an engine failure.
The few position shifts during the race were almost all due to failures. Chris Amon had an accident on lap 39, so Lauda was able to take third place without a fight behind the two Tyrrell who had been in the lead since Andretti's failure. Clay Regazzoni managed to overtake both Carlos Pace and Ronnie Peterson during the final laps and thus secured the last championship point of the day in sixth place.
The Tyrrell one-two victory that day was the only success of a vehicle with an unusual number of wheels. All other Grand Prix victories in Formula 1 history were achieved with four-wheeled cars.
