The 1977 German Grand Prix took place on July 31st in Hockenheim and was the eleventh race of the 1977 Automobile World Championship .

Reports

background

For the eleventh World Championship round at the Hockenheimring , which from this year onwards permanently replaced the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, which was no longer up-to-date in terms of safety aspects for Formula 1, as the venue for the German Grand Prix, there was again a strong field of participants, whose 30 drivers chose one of the Tried to qualify for 24 starting places. The unusually high number of small private teams that had required pre-qualification at the British Grand Prix two weeks earlier , however, was not achieved.

The Renault team decided after the unfortunate debut at the British Grand Prix to take part in the Germany-GP. Instead, further test drives were scheduled to further develop the car.

On the occasion of the home Grand Prix, the ATS Racing Team expanded its involvement to include two Penske PC4 cars , giving the local racing driver Hans Heyer the chance to make his Formula 1 debut. Teddy Pilette took over the BRM P207 from Guy Edwards . In addition, Héctor Rebaque returned to the cockpit of the second factory Hesketh .

training

Jody Scheckter took pole position for the first time this year and for the second time overall. Brabham driver John Watson secured second place on the grid, as he has done several times this season . World Cup leader Niki Lauda followed in the second row alongside defending champion James Hunt . Hans-Joachim Stuck and Jacques Laffite formed the third row on the grid.

run

After just a few meters, the race for Clay Regazzoni and Alan Jones ended in a collision.

At the front, the starting order was maintained during the first laps until Watson retired on lap seven due to an engine failure. Carlos Reutemann and Mario Andretti meanwhile overtook the sixth-placed Laffite.

Lauda caught up with the leading Scheckter and was finally able to overtake him on lap 13. Hunt also tried to overtake the South African, but the South African defended himself successfully until Hunt had to retire on lap 33 due to an engine problem. This put Stuck in third place ahead of Reutemann. When Andretti also retired because of an engine failure, Vittorio Brambilla took fifth place ahead of Patrick Tambay , who thus achieved his first points result in Formula 1. However, this was only made possible by the fact that Ronnie Peterson , who had previously been sixth, also fell victim to an engine failure a few laps before the end of the race.

Hans-Joachim Stuck was on the podium for the first time after a Grand Prix. Guest starter Hans Heyer, who started the race although he missed the qualification, retired after nine laps due to a broken gear lever, but was disqualified anyway due to his illegal participation. To date, this is the only time a driver has earned DNQ, DNS, DNF and DSQ status in a single race.
