The 2014 German Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix Santander of Germany 2014 ) took place on July 20 at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg in Hockenheim and was the tenth race of the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the British Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 67 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 158 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 220 points ahead of Ferrari .

The German Grand Prix switched regularly from the Nürburgring to the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg.

At the German Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

For the first time there were two DRS zones on the Hockenheimring, zone one began 60 meters after the north curve , the measuring point was 110 meters before the curve. The activation point for the second DRS zone was on the Parabolika 260 meters after the exit of the curve combination Entrance Parabolika , at the end of which the measuring point was located.

Compared to the 2012 German Grand Prix, changes were made to the route in three places. In front of the north curve, a strip of grass grating with a width of one meter was laid out. In the right curve in front of the south curve, an additional curb stone with a height of five centimeters was installed behind the curb on the inside. A new drainage system was installed there to allow rainwater to drain away more quickly in the southern curve .

Rosberg used a modified helmet design on the occasion of the German national soccer team's title win at the 2014 World Cup .

Jules Bianchi , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Kevin Magnussen and Adrian Sutil (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Fernando Alonso (three times), Hamilton (twice) and Sebastian Vettel (once), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix. At the Hockenheimring, Alonso won three times, Hamilton once.

The race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Felix Holter (GER), Tom Kristensen (DEN) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN) as well as a national race steward.

In the run-up to the race, the FIA informed the teams that the FRIC system would be interpreted as a movable, aerodynamic aid with immediate effect and thus violate Article 3.15 of the Technical Regulations. During the technical inspection on the Thursday before the Grand Prix, no vehicle was equipped with a FRIC system.

With 52,000 spectators on race Sunday, the 2014 German Grand Prix set a negative record for the number of spectators at a Formula 1 race at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg.

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Alonso. Susie Wolff took over the Williams from Bottas and Giedo van der Garde took over the Sauber from Esteban Gutiérrez in this training session . In the second free practice, Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg. Ricciardo came in third. In the third free practice session, Rosberg again led ahead of Hamilton and Alonso.

Qualifying

The damaged Hamilton car is recovered

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. About seven minutes before the end, Hamilton broke the right front brake disc in front of the Sachskurve. As a result, his vehicle spun and hit the boundary. Qualifying was interrupted to recover the vehicle. In the accident, the car's gearbox was damaged and had to be changed, so that Hamilton was moved five places back. Since Mercedes decided to use brake discs from another manufacturer - IC instead of Brembo - on Hamilton's car, it was initially said that Hamilton had to start the race from the pit lane. Since the new brake discs had the same weight and size as the old ones, he was finally allowed to start from the grid under Article 34.2 of the Sports Regulations. Marcus Ericsson drove no time due to a hydraulic leak and thus failed to qualify, but was subsequently allowed to start the race because he was fast enough in free practice. He too starts from the pit lane because the repair work on his car was not finished 3.5 hours after the end of qualifying, as required by Article 34.4 of the sporting regulations. In the end, Rosberg set the fastest time. The Caterham and Marussia pilots as well as Maldonado and Sutil were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg stayed in first place. Hamilton, who set no time because of the accident, as well as Romain Grosjean , Gutiérrez, Jean-Éric Vergne , Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg was once again the fastest and achieved pole position in front of Bottas and Felipe Massa .

run

At the start, Rosberg kept the lead over Bottas. Magnussen started better than the two Williams drivers and pushed himself into the first corner on the inside lane next to Massa. Massa pulled inwards at the apex of the curve, however, so that Massa's right rear tire and Magnussen's left front tire touched. Massas Williams was overturned and overturned, Massa was eliminated, but remained uninjured. The safety car went out to recover the vehicle . Magnussen pitted but was able to continue. Ricciardo just avoided Massa's car, but had to drive a long way through the run-off zone and lost many positions. Rosberg led in the safety car phase ahead of Bottas, Vettel, Alonso and Nico Hülkenberg .

While Rosberg immediately pulled away after the restart on lap three, his team-mate Hamilton, who started on the harder tire compound, performed a few overtaking maneuvers in the back of the field. On the seventh lap, Ricciardo and Hamilton passed Sutil in front of the hairpin. There was a slight contact between Sutil and Hamilton. Shortly afterwards, Sergio Pérez and Daniil Kwjat touched , who wanted to overtake Pérez on the outside. Kwjat got off the track and made a pit stop. Behind Pérez were Raikkonen, Ricciardo and Hamilton. In the eleventh lap Ricciardo passed Raikkonen. Hamilton also tried a maneuver against Raikkonen in this round, but was unsuccessful. Two laps later, Raikkonen tried to drive past Ricciardo again before the hairpin bend. Hamilton took advantage of the situation and overtook both drivers in one go.

The first pit stop phase began on the twelfth lap. Since there were several different strategies, there were a few pit stop-related overtaking maneuvers on the track in the next laps. Raikkonen, who was not yet in the pits, was on lap 15 ahead of Vettel and Alonso, who both overtook him before the hairpin bend. Raikkonen was trapped and its front wing was slightly damaged.

Rosberg kept the lead during his pit stop. Bottas fell behind Hamilton, whose first stop was later. With the new tires, Bottas quickly caught Hamilton and passed him. Hamilton was asked by the pits that he shouldn't fight Bottas due to the different tire conditions. After Hamilton pitted eleven laps after Rosberg, he was again behind a few drivers. At first he tried to overtake Button. He damaged his front wing in the hairpin, but passed Button a little later and a few laps later also passed Hulkenberg and was in fifth place. Grosjean had meanwhile retired with a technical problem.

The second pit stop phase began on lap 34. Again Alonso was the first driver to change tires. Shortly after him, his team-mate Raikkonen also pitted. Raikkonen should originally have stayed outside longer, but its tires were too worn out. Rosberg, Bottas and Hamilton pitted on lap 43. Rosberg and Bottas stayed ahead, Hamilton fell behind Alonso. Shortly afterwards there was a fire at the Toro Rosso of Kwjat, which parked his car in the run-off zone of the hairpin bend, where the vehicle was then extinguished. Meanwhile, Hamilton caught up with Alonso by around two seconds per lap with its fresh, super-soft tires.

On the 50th lap, Sutil, who had already been lapped, lost control of his vehicle and stopped after a spin on the start-finish straight. Hamilton pitted immediately and switched to another set of the super-soft tire compound in order to have better chances in the last laps of the race in the event of another safety car deployment with fresh tires. However, the safety car did not come out onto the track, which surprised most of the drivers and team managers - especially in view of the fact that the race management in the framework program for the GP2 sprint race in the morning sent the safety car out onto the track for no apparent reason and thus strongly influenced the race result would have. If the safety car had hit the track in this situation, Hamilton would have had a good chance of victory with fresh, super-soft tires.

Hamilton caught up quickly with the new tires and drove the fastest race lap in this phase. After he had overtaken Alonso, he pitted. Hamilton, who had already made up 17 positions, also caught up with Bottas, but there was no overtaking maneuver as Bottas was very fast on the straights. In contrast, there were a few overtaking maneuvers in the final phase in the rest of the field. Ricciardo initially passed Button and was then under pressure from Alonso, who had fresher tires. Ricciardo withstood Alonso's overtaking attempts for several laps, but was eventually overtaken on the 63rd lap. After the race, Alonso was positive about Ricciardo's tackling qualities. Button went to change tires three laps before the end.

Rosberg finally won the German Grand Prix for the first time. As in the previous race, Bottas finished second. Hamilton was third in front of Vettel, Alonso and Ricciardo. Hülkenberg, Button, Magnussen and Pérez completed the top 10.

Rosberg extended his lead in the drivers' world championship. Hamilton stayed second, Ricciardo third. The first two positions of the designers remained unchanged. Williams passed Ferrari into third position.

Vergne was penalized for having benefited from an evasive maneuver through the run-off zone in the sixth corner in a duel with Grosjean.
