Susie Wolff MBE (* 6. December 1982 in Oban , Scotland as Suzanne Stoddart ) is a former British car racer . She competed in the DTM for Mercedes-Benz from 2006 to 2012 and was a test and development driver for the Williams team in Formula 1 from 2012 to 2015 .
Career
Beginnings in motorsport (1996-2005)
Wolff started her motorsport career in karting in 1996 , where she was elected British kart driver from 1996-2000. In 1997 she took first place in the 24hr Middle East Kart Championship and the Scottish Intercontinental Junior A Kart Championship . In 1998 came tenth place in the British Junior Intercontinental A-Kart Championship and eleventh in the European Intercontinental Junior A-Kart Championship . At the Formula A kart world championship in 2000 Wolff reached 15th place.
In 2000 Wolff made her formula racing debut in the British Formula Ford , in which she competed in several races. In 2002 Wolff switched to the British Formula Renault . After finishing 18th overall in her first season, she improved to ninth place overall with a podium finish in 2003. She was named a BRDC Rising Star that season . She also made it to the finals of the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award , which was awarded to her team-mate Alex Lloyd , who had become runner-up. In 2004 Wolff contested her third season in the British Formula Renault. While with Westley Barber her teammate again won the runner-up, she was fifth in the championship with three podium finishes. This season she came back to the finals of the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.
In 2005 Wolff first moved to the British Formula 3 championship for Alan Docking Racing . She scored ninth points in her first race. After two races, however, their engagement ended due to an ankle injury. She finished the championship in 18th place. Later that year she started twice in the British Porsche Carrera Cup .
DTM (2006–2012)
In 2006 Wolff switched to touring car racing and started for Mücke Motorsport in the DTM . She received a two-year-old model of the AMG-Mercedes C-Class . A ninth place at the season finale at the Hockenheimring was her best result. In 2007 Wolff stayed with Mücke and competed again in a two-year-old model of the AMG-Mercedes C-Class. In the first race of the season at the Hockenheimring, she was involved in a serious accident with Tom Kristensen . While Kristensen had to take a break, Wolff was uninjured. With a tenth place in Mugello as the best result, she also ended her second DTM season without points.
In 2008 Wolff switched to Persson Motorsport and received a one year old vehicle for the first time, a so-called annual car . So she had the same technical requirements as her teammates Gary Paffett and Mathias Lauda . In contrast to her teammates, Wolff remained without points this season. Her best result of the season was a tenth place at the Norisring . In 2009 Wolff scored again no points. While two tenth places were her best results, her teammate Jamie Green won a race and finished the season in seventh championship place.
In 2010 Wolff and Green got another teammate with Cong Fu Cheng . All three received an AMG-Mercedes C-Class car of the year. In the third race of the season at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz , she achieved seventh place and thus her first points in the DTM in the 44th race. At the ninth round at the Hockenheimring she repeated this placement. She finished the championship in 13th place overall and left Cheng behind in the overall standings. With Green, who also won a race this year, she could not keep up again. In 2011 Wolff played her fourth season for Persson. At the end of the season she was the best result with an eleventh place without points.
In 2012 Wolff drove again for the Mercedes team Persson in the DTM. With a DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé, it received a current vehicle for the first time. Twelfth place was her best result at the end of the season. She was beaten by all fellow brands. Wolff ended her DTM career at the end of the season.
Formula 1 (2012-2015)
In addition to her involvement in the DTM, Wolff worked as a development driver for Williams F1 in Formula 1 in 2012 . In 2013 , 2014 and 2015 Wolff stayed with Williams as a test driver. In 2014 she took part in the first free practice session at the British and German Grands Prix , making her the first female driver to compete on a Formula 1 weekend after Giovanna Amati in 1992 . In 2015 it was used again in free practice at the British Grand Prix .
On November 4, 2015, Wolff announced that he would be retiring from active motorsport at the end of the season.
Personal
Susie Wolff has been married to Toto Wolff (* 1972), Head of Motorsport at Mercedes, since October 2011 . The couple lives in Ermatingen on Lake Constance .
