Race calendar and results

The racing calendar included ten championship races. The DTM returned to the Red Bull Ring (formerly A1-Ring ). In addition, an event that was not part of the championship was held in the Munich Olympic Stadium. The Race of Champions system was used there . A race in Shanghai on the Shanghai Pudong Street Circuit was originally planned for November 6th as the season finale. However, the race was canceled before the start of the season. It was not approved by the Chinese motorsport authorities as the World Touring Car Championship already had an event at China's Guangdong International Circuit this weekend .

In rainy conditions, the field started behind the safety car . Nevertheless, only Gary Paffett was eliminated until the end of the race. All other pilots reached the finish behind the safety car. Due to the great risk of aquaplaning, this had come back onto the track. After 75 percent of the race had been completed, the race management stopped driving on the street circuit on the 64th lap.

The race was ended prematurely because the time limit had been reached. Originally, a distance of 98 laps of 1.929 km each, which corresponds to a total distance of 189.042 km, was planned.

The race took place under consistently rainy conditions. At the start, pole setter Mike Rockenfeller initially retained the lead. In the eleventh lap, however, he had to admit defeat to fellow brand name Martin Tomczyk , who had meanwhile dropped from third place to fifth.

Tomczyk kept the lead until the end and thus took the lead in the championship from Bruno Spengler , who was seventh. Mattias Ekström and Edoardo Mortara , who stood on the podium for the first time in a DTM race, followed in second and third . Audi achieved a triple victory with it.

The eighth DTM season race in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in Oschersleben took place on September 18, 2011 and covered a distance of 45 laps of 3.696 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 166.320 km. The race was ended prematurely because the time limit had been reached. Originally, a distance of 50 laps of 3.696 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 184.800 km, was planned.

The race took place under rainy conditions and two induction laps were driven. Pole setter Miguel Molina had the best start, but lost the lead to Bruno Spengler in the first corner because he braked too late. Behind them there were turbulent duels, from which the rear starting Gary Paffett , Martin Tomczyk and Christian Vietoris benefited in particular . On the eighth lap, Mattias Ekström , who was getting faster and faster, finally managed to overtake the leading Spengler. From this point on, Ekström led the race without any pit stops.

Two laps after his first pit stop, the race took a negative turn for Spengler. He drove hard over the curbs, damaging his suspension. As a result, he dropped out of the points and finally gave up in the pits three laps before the end of the race.

Ekström finally won the race by over 40 seconds ahead of Tomczyk and Edoardo Mortara , giving Audi its second triple victory in a row. Paffett and Vietoris, who both started from the back row of the grid, followed in fourth and fifth. Vietoris scored his first ever DTM points in this race and pole setter Molina managed to score points for the first time this season.

In the championship, Tomczyk extended his lead over Spengler to nine points, which means that he can win the title on his own in the following race.

9th race: Valencia

The ninth DTM season race at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia took place on October 2, 2011 and covered a distance of 45 laps of 4.005 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 180.225 km.

Even before the start of the race, there were discussions about the Mercedes vehicles of David Coulthard and Renger van der Zande , which finished third and fourth in qualifying. The rear wings of both vehicles did not comply with the regulations and so the race management decided to put both at the end of the field. As their teams protested against the decision, both drivers were allowed to keep their positions, but were disqualified immediately after the race.

At the start, Mattias Ekström kept the lead, which he kept until the end of the race after adjusting for a pit stop. Filipe Albuquerque , who started second in the race, first had to defend himself against Coulthard, but then held the position behind Ekström until the end.

The championship leader Martin Tomczyk , who was able to win the championship early in this race, made up a few places at the start and, thanks to his strategy, got past Mercedes drivers Coulthard and van der Zande into third position.

Since Coulthard and van der Zande were taken out of the classification, Audi ended up with a six-fold victory .

Because Bruno Spengler , the runner-up in the drivers' standings, only scored two points and Ekström could only have maintained his title chances in a 0-point race by Tomczyk, third place was enough for Tomczyk to claim his first DTM championship title. He is the first driver to become DTM champion in a year-old car.

The tenth DTM season race at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg in Hockenheim took place on October 23, 2011 and covered a distance of 38 laps of 4.574 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 173.812 km.

Mercedes driver Jamie Green secured victory over the already established DTM champion Martin Tomczyk and Miguel Molina , who started from pole position and achieved his first podium finish in the DTM in this race.

With a sixth place Mattias Ekström pushed past Bruno Spengler in the battle for the runner-up , who did not score any points in ninth place.
